Based on my current setup, this was the reply I got from TIF2 when I asked about the best way for me to go for a lid solution...

The non-Ultra overlay harness already has connectors that will plug into the harness that is provided as part of the rear saddlebag speaker lid kit. You will need to get the 2-ohm version to attach directly to the Harmon head unit. Then, you will need to get the radio flashed to enable rear fader control (that, as well as a "special qualization" flash) is included as part of the rear speaker kit. However, some dealers will charge labor to install the included software.

The problem will be output when driven only by the head unit. You'll probably be disappointed. Hogtunes has a pretty cool bracket to mount their new 70.2 amp on the right side of the inner fairing - so you could add that amp to your exisitng system pretty easily. This amp would only drive the rear lid speakers, leaving everything else about your present system intact.

Of course, if you wanted to start over with a 4-channel amp then the sky is the limit  :)
I haven;t checked all the colors available in the factory painted speaker lids (I'm surprised Spiced Rum isn't avail?) but Paint by Gene has done Spiced Rum before. They are located in Seattle, WA.

Hope this helps ...
[/size]

Currently I have:

Hawg Wired DCS1202 DCS Series 120W Amplifier
Hawg Wired SX Series 4 Ohm Component Speakers
Hawg Wired STK100B Dash Tweeter Kit (Gloss Black)
Boom! Audio XM Satellite Radio Kit - (76404-06)
Overlay Harness – Non Ultra - (70169-06)
Harman/Kardon Dummy Module

Now I will be ordering the 2 lids in primer (90200612, 90200613), and the "Boom! Audio Saddlebag Speaker kit" (76000202). I will add the Hogtunes NCA 70.2 amp using their mounting kit (4405-0234) which allows the 2nd amp to be mounted the radio and the brake side speaker.

My only hold up now is my brain. I need to understand how this all gets wired. I have read the instructions and from what I can see it will be almost a "plug 'n play" deal under the fairing but I'd like some confirming opinions. I'm also wondering how to wire the speakers given the bags have to remain removable. Does the wiring in the Boom kit cover this?

I almost have clarity on this... Just need that final bit of fog lifted.

These are the instructions for the saddlebag speaker kit:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Media/downloads/Service/isheets/-J05386.pdf

Check-out items 4 and 11 in the service parts list picture and parts list.  The audio harness runs from inside the fairing to the saddlebags, and the jumper harness for each bag provides a quick disconnect to the audio harness for bag removal--simple.

Good luck with your project.

Well that explains that we'll enough. Thank you for the instructions. Now if can only make sense of the ones for the amp and how it gets wired in I will be away to the races.

The amp should be pretty easy to wire in. Since you already have the non-Ultra overlay, you have (2) 6-pin connectors with the rear speaker outs from the head unit. These connectors are normally used to connect up the rear lid harness that runs from the fairing to the rear lid speakers ( the harness included with the rear lid speaker kit).

You'll need to interrupt this connection and wire the 70.2 inline. The rear speaker signals that are on the NUOH connectors will be wired to the input side of the 70.2, and the rear speaker signals of the new speaker lid harness connectors will be wired to the output side of the 70.2. You will also need to run power and ground to the 70.2 amp as well.

Hope this helps,
Rich

Rich,

You make it sound simple. Very reassuring in deed. Attached is the instructions from the NCA-70.2 amp. As infantile as this sounds I wonder if you could take a look at it and tell me where in these pages is what you so clearly described, laid out by Hogtunes?

I think it's the rear speaker instructions but they go on and on about different scenarios that are messing with my head. They say they are a plug and play organization but that's not clear to me.

Oh yes... One other thing if anyone knows... In the saddlebag speaker lid instructions so generously supplied by Carl, they talk about a special entitlement on page 7 to a software upgrade which I assume re-flashes the HK Head to (I assume) activate the fader control. How is this done. I ask because there is a strong likely hood that I will be buying the parts online and not through my local dealer. Compared to lshd1.com my guys will be about 40% higher. That said I can't imagine them being too receptive to doing the flash for me. Thoughts?

I would suggest you call Pez at Hogtunes. He'll explain everything much better than I could. I can speak to general signal flow but as far as the exact connectors used and what additional connectors Hogtunes supplies - they will be the expert.

Do you have the 2010 Touring Model Service Manual and the 2010 FLHXSE supplement?

In the saddlebag speaker lid instructions so generously supplied by Carl, they talk about a special entitlement on page 7 to a software upgrade which I assume re-flashes the HK Head to (I assume) activate the fader control. How is this done.  The dealer connects its Digital Technican to your bike and the tech downloads a software mod to your bike. I ask because there is a strong likely hood that I will be buying the parts online and not through my local dealer. Compared to lshd1.com my guys will be about 40% higher. That said I can't imagine them being too receptive to doing the flash for me.  Ask the dealer for cost info.  Previously, the download for fader control was not a separate charge to the dealer, so it may be a simple labor charge. Thoughts?

Good luck with your project.

I am waiting on a call back from Hogtunes tech to ask, but in the mean time I got to wondering... Does harley make an amp I could add under the fairing that might be a more plug and play solution just in case?

HD now offers its 40X4 (160W amp) in an in-fairing version--you can find it on HD's website or the current P&A paper catalog--it's the same amp offered on the CVO Ultra.

Personal opinion only from a non-tech or audio professional--sell the HW stuff and start over.  Buy the RF 300x4 amp and high quality 6.5" speakers in the fairing (perhaps some good components with the tweeter in gauge cups), and wait a couple of months for the Hybrid Audio Technologies speakers for the HD saddlebag speaker lids.

And for sure, buy the HD Service Manuals and FLHXSE supplement.

I love this site. Carl... yer a real beauty! "Sure start over again... why not.... it's only money!" Buddy... I have to introduce you to my wife! :behead2:

Now back to the plan!

I got off the phone with HogTunes. They were not much help. Their harnesses donot interupt the connection at the non-Ultra overlay harness in the fairing, but rather they supply 15 more feet of cable to to run both their input and outputs to the back of the bike to get the Hi-Level Input from the ends of the speaker wires and then connect driectly to the speaker. So essentially the signal travels from the head to the back of the bike on harley wiring, but rather than go to the speaker it gets shot back up to the front on HogTunes input wiring, into the 70.2 amp, than back again on their output pairs to connect to the rear speakers.

The connectors they use are all spades, and they make all their connections at speaker terminals which would be fine if this was an Ultra with fixed speaker pods, but my speakers are in removable bags so theres that.... plus i don't really want to run MORE wiring to the back than i have to.

So I want to make the amp conneections in the fairing. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i need either to cut the ends of my overlay harness and the new HD rear speaker wires and put spade connectors on the them - or get some HD connectors and replace the hogtunes spades.

All I need to figure out is the polarity and what colour wire is what. Am I totally Frigged?

Help???

That'd be me. I'm actually not an idiot but I'm way more mechanically inclined than an audiofile. Ohms amps and volts ale greek to me, but i can put things together so i can install the thing so long as i know it won't blow up or sizzle.

id cut the leads that hd supplies that go from the over lay to the back - and wire the amp in there - that way you have a hd plug on both ends with the amp in the middle.

use solder connections and heat shrink

you are not going to get a plug and play ready harness from hw or hd

there are a few on this site that might make you said harness and send it to you for a fee - but thats not me
