Key fob power locks on the Ultra
« on: March 17, 2012, 05:16:37 PM »

 :confused5:
Maybe someone has covered this before,  but it was new info to me today.   Met another CVO Ultra rider with an '09 just like mine.   He was unhappy with several things on his and one of them happened to be the design or (lack of) proper design or functionality of the power lock mechanism.

Sometimes when I get off the bike and don't want to take my jacket with me or some other possessions that I don't want to lose,  I take the lock fob with me and just hit it to lock up the Tour Pak and saddle bags and walk off.

Now when I do this,  I also take the security fob with me too so the bike cannot be started and ridden off and the alarm would go off.  So,  I do (NOT) lock the ignition switch in these instances.

I found out that all one has to do is turn the unlocked ign. switch to the "on" position and then hit the console power lock (unlock) switch and bingo, they all unlock................WTF.

So it turned out to be an "exposurer" I didn't realize.   I would have thought that the lock fob would have disabled the console switch in some manner but it does not.   The guy said they (HD) finally corrected this problem in the '11 or '12 models where the ignition switch (also) gets locked up when the power lock fob is used.

It was new news to me....... :nervous:

I just tried on my '12 ... Turning the ignition on without the fob present sounds the alarm but still allows the bags to be unlocked by the dash switch. This is good to know because I have been just locking the bags and walking away from the bike without locking the ignition.

I realized this early on.

I don't actually lock my forks as I generally don't turn my wheel all the way to the left. But, I do turn the ignition switch to the fork lock position and THEN hit the FOB. When it's locked in that position, the ignition switch can't be turned to allow someone to hit the unlock switch on the bags.

There are many times in the garage when I need to get in the tourpak and it is locked but I don't have my key. You can turn the ignition switch, unlock the bags, and turn the switch back BEFORE the alarm even sounds.

I hid a toggle that cuts the lead to the unlock side of the switch on the dash. That way I don't have to lock the ignition up and don't have to worry about someone hitting switch to unlock my bags. I found out about that when I first got my bike and though it was a pretty $hitty design flaw too.  >:(

What's to keep someone from observing you flipping that little toggle switch, then flipping it themselves once you've walked away?

I don't understand why people don't want to lock their ignition lock with the key.  Have we become so lazy we can't be bothered to remove a key from our pocket, insert it into a lock, and turn it to help secure our $30-$40k toys?  Maybe in a few more years H-D will decide to offer a real integrated keyless entry and security system like those offered by the auto folks.  In the meantime, I don't think it's beneath me to turn a simple old fashioned key in a tumbler.  Keeps me grounded in the mechanical world I love.  And yes, I also prefer the manual pushbutton security fobs versus the buttonless automatic fobs.  I get the biggest kick out of how so many people don't want to deal with carrying a fob around so they just leave it in a saddlebag or under a side cover.  DUH!   It's rather hard to feel sympathy when such people have their bikes stolen because anyone can just jump on and fire it up and ride away.  A thief doesn't even have to be good these days, just bold.

I always keep it flipped. The only time I undo it is if in garage and don't have keys with me and want to get into bags.

It still remains (to me), an incomplete and poorly thought out technical design.   The damn bike weighs over 850 pounds and so in a lot of instances you're not so concerned as to someone rolling it away cause the alarm will go bonkers anyway.

But they give you two sets of fobs.  Each one has a security fob and attached is a key with lock and unlock buttons on it.  Yes,  you could take the extra time to insert the key in the ignition and lock it,  but the setup makes it reasonable to assume that you can just hit the lock button and hear it lock up the Tour Pak and bags and just walk away...........cause you're carrying the fob with you.

Oooops,  you're still exposed. :nixweiss:

The same day I bought my bike, I ordered a "regular" style key from my dealer. I hated carrying that huge key in my pocket with the buttons. Now I have a much smaller key and the round key fob. The huge key with buttons is still in my office desk drawer. When leaving bike sit, I always lock bags with dash switch and turn the lock with the key. I think if you time those two moves, it would take you all of about 5 seconds. IMO that is not much to help protect my investment.

Its covered in the manual on my 12 CUSE.

The ignition switch has to be turned to the lock position to be locked by the remote, if not = no lock

And there is the answer.  If all else fails read the manual.
