Forks locked and can't unlock them
« on: March 18, 2012, 06:32:35 PM »

I was playing with the remote lock's and now my forks are locked and the ignition switch is in the off position. It locked the forks without being in the lock position. Now I can't get it unlocked! Tried the key but it seems something has stripped out in the key tumbler. Anyone had this Problem?

I found a little bit of "slop" in my ignition switch ... If the switch was not fully turned to the left, the automatic locks would not release.

Check the fob battery, I did the same thing, was fooling around and got the whole system confused, turned out the battery was weak. I tried a new one in desperation and after a couple clicks back and forth every thing straightened out.

X2. Try pulling your handlebars as far to the left or right depending on which position that are locked in.

It looks like the ignition switch has stripped out. Can't unlock with the key. It's not jammed up but some how locked the fork and switch in the off position. It's going to be tuff to get it out of the garage and get it to the shop. Its under warranty so I will let them fix it.

Mine did the same thing & I had to remove the lock cyl & unlock it manually. I havent taken it back to the dealer to check yet but I havent turned it back over to the lock position either. The lock cyl always felt stiff when positioned in the lock position so I just use the fob to lock & set the alarm whenever I'm away from the bike.

Same thing just happened to me last friday on my 12 SEUC7, good thing the bike at home in my garage. Ignition switch got stuck in the off position pressed all the way down with the forks locked and nor the key or fob would do anything to move it. Bike seemed dead and locked with no lights flashing or anything with the fob. So I stopped by my Dealer to ask questions about this, they offered to send a mechanic with me right away (Great Dealer), he was able to lift the ignition cover by inserting a small screwdriver and pressing a small shiny round button from under the cover (about in line with the key hole),and by playing with the spring and shaft,  he was able to get it to work again. There is an electrical wire under the cover that looks pinched so they will order a new ignition switch and replace it soon. In the meantime I can ride the bike but without locking the forks when parking, I prefer they test everything when the bike will be at the shop with the new switch installed.
Note : I added the HD chrome cover over the swithes around the ignition, maybe the thickness of this cover prevents the ignition switch from going all the way down and caused this, I dont know yet.
Hope this can help.

I remember reading a post not too long ago from a gentleman with a jammed ignition switch/fork lock, and he indicated that once the dealer got the switch apart it became obvious the problem was caused by the electrical wire for the power lock system being misrouted and pinched in the mechanism.  After reading the comments in this thread, it sounds like this wasn't just an isolated situation.  Wonder if Harley is aware of this, and if they plan a bulletin and a fix?

If the  bike is in warranty, let the dealer fix the problem. That way the Motor Co will know of the problem. All dealers preforming warranty work have to send the paper work to Harley to get paid. Even the bad ones want to get paid. The Motor Co tracks all warranty claims. Harley pays more attention to warranty claims than they do to phone calls, emails,or letters.

When looking at the pinched wire, my mechanic said they had seen this problem on a few other bikes as well.

It was a bear getting the bike in the trailer with the forks locked. Shop has it and sounds like the same problem you guys have been having. Be careful where you lock the forks, you don't want to be leaving the girlfriend when the husband shows up.
