Need opinions! Trade in 2010 for 2012?
« on: March 23, 2012, 05:07:11 PM »

Guys:

I can trade my 2010 for a "Black" 2012 for my bike + 8k or a "Citris" (not on the floor) for +11k.

3k more just for the color?

What do you think of the Black?

Why am I even concidering doing this?

I can't tell where you are, but the price on the Citrus should be MSRP...just like the black. If it's not, find another dealer. Many here can direct you to MSRP dealers.
Why are you trading your '10 for the '12? Stereo? You might be able to upgrade the stereo for a lot less than a trade. If it's color, it all depends on what's that is worth to you.

I love my '10 SR, but if I could afford it, I would have traded for a Krypto. Coolest color since the '04 Pumpkin to my eyes.

Like everything else on this forum, it all comes down to wants and money. Plenty here to help you spend yours. Let us know what you decide.

Why are you asking MY question?

IMHO, $11k difference in two years is excessive.  Why are you considering this?  Is there something about the 2012 that is so compelling it's worth $11k to you?  If it's just a couple of new options, like the saddlebag speakers for instance, I'm pretty sure you could duplicate that on your existing bike for one heck of a lot less than $11k.

On the other hand, as long as it's your money and not mine, why not?  Easy for me to say, I don't have to explain it to the better half.

If your dealer is trying to charge you more for one color over the other then the first thing you should be doing is finding another dealer.  All three CVO colors should be the same price - MSRP - and no higher.  After that it is 100% up to you.  Does it make "financial sense"?  Of course not but then few things about these bikes and accessories make financial sense.  If you have the money and want to spend it then go ahead.  I am sure that you will not be disappointed...

Guys:
I got the bike in 09. It has 12k miles on it. Yes this is stupid (granted) but looking ahead say two more years the bike will have 20k on it and a new one will be 20k instead of 8. OK again, like I said, this is stupid... But if you think of it my way we are ....... yes, its stupid...

I don't think it's stupid, if it's what you want.  None of us NEED a CVO HD, it's all just wants.  IMO, a bike's color is the main thing to draw me to it, so if you like one of the new colors better than yours, then go for it.  I do not understand why the dealer is charging 3K more for the Citrus, unless he is discounting the Black and selling the Citrus at MSRP (doubtful).  I would NOT pay a 3K premium for a particular color...I would take my business elsewhere.  There are many dealers who sell at MSRP and that's what a person should pay, or less if they can do so.

It's only money, and I haven't seen a casket with a safe deposit box built in...

The 3k difference does not make sense to me.  I would make sure that you understood the dealer on the price difference and then ask him why the difference.  I would not pay 3k above MSRP for the bike.  But on the other hand it's your money.  I'm a new car dealer and we have never charged above sticker price on anything.  Not even new products that are a hard to get item.  We feel like that would be screwing the customer.

According to the dealer he is giving me under msrp for the grey/ black bike. They are adding $900 for frieght and set up. The delta is the value of the 2010. Called a 2nd dealer and they wanted 14K plus my bike.. If the Citris was on the floor for the 8k I would have it home now. The black is a stunning bike and I am thinking about it but I have a black heritage in the garage..  My 2010 is still looking pretty dam good to me. Maybe I'll just buy tee shirt.

Now your thinking...

If I had a rather new bike, the krypto probably wouldn't have been as big a pull.  But since my bike at the time was 6.5 years old and 129k miles, I couldn't resist it.

MSRP is $32,669.00, and freight is $380.00, for a total MSRP of $33,049.  The extra $520 they tacked on for "prep" is a bullchit charge.  They are already compensated for the little bit of "prep" they do by Harley, and they have a built in profit of approximately $6k at MSRP without the bullchit prep charge or any other fee's they might add later.

btw, I think I mentioned in the other thread that trade-in on the 2010, according to the book values I could find, would be in the  $21k to $24k range, and retail book would be in the high $20's.  Assume you pay full MSRP for the 2012, and they give you low book for your trade, and that would put you right around the $11k difference they quoted.  They stand to make at least $11k profit on the complete transaction assuming they sell the 2010 for average retail book.  And then of course you get to do the pipes and tune and other customizing that you already have done on the 2010.  If you spend that money with the dealer as well, these folks should be treating you like a long lost best friend.

As Midnight Rider mentioned, you can't take it with you.  As long as it won't keep you from paying your bills, or get you thrown out of the house, do what will make you happiest.

IMO, if you're on here asking us whether you should buy a bike or not, then you are not convinced yourself.  The only person I've ever asked if I should get a new bike is my better half..  If you want it, it shouldn't matter two hoots to hell what we think about whether you should get it or not.  You're the only on that has to decide.   What do you want to do??    ;)

I have to agree with everyone here....if you like it then go for it....but $3k for a different color is outright excessive. The 2 bikes should be the same price...maybe he has the citrus promised and he is seeing if he can make more doing the deal with you instead. Either way....shop around for another dealer who will price it fair.

WEEEELL...I sold my 2010 CVO Street Glide (a perfectly good bike I might add) to a friend of mine and bought a 2012 CVO Road Glide.

Did it make financial sense? HECK NO! But I wanted the "Skunk" when I saw it and did the deal and am happy about it! :pepper:

My philosophy is you "only go around the block once" so if you can afford to do it and the 2012 "speaks to you", then do it with no regrets!

Now about that extra $3,000 difference for the colour, "forgetaboutit"...that is "highway robbery"...find another dealer as there is no reason whatsoever why that colour costs an extra $3,000 dollars...JMHO!

It sounds like you are not sold on the black and really want the hot citrus bike.  Can't say as I blame you but I am a little biased!  :2vrolijk_21:

Find a dealer who will give you the bike at MSRP and a fair trade-in for yours and go for it.  I have yet to hear from someone who has said "man I wish I would not have bought this beautiful new CVO"...
