I Installed a Truck-Lite Phase-7 Headlight
« on: April 01, 2012, 03:34:02 PM »

I've been following several threads on the board regarding LED headlights and decided to order the Phase 7 Truck-Lite 7" LED headlight.  I just picked up the HD Wire Harness and had pre-oredered the Frenched Trim Ring.  A Frenched Trim Ring is recommended, because the Truck-lite housing protrudes about an inch further, leaving a black plastic ring visable.  The new trim ring would ideally hide that and clean up the lines.  The Frenched trim ring I ordered did not work out. This one has a tab at the bottom, rather than (like stock) a screw hole in the housing.  I have to figure out which one will work and return this one to JP Cycles.  It was somewhat hard to tell what would work looking at their web site. No worries, it's time to back up and punt.

The headlight was purchased from a vendor on Ebay for $249.00 + shipping.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=190652151731&view=all&tid=652062357009

The installation was simple, once I figured out how everything fit together.

Looking directly into the lens-- note the panel located midway. It separates the high/low beam reflectors.  It also has a circuit board embedded along with the rear facing LEDs.  The LEDs are pointed away from the lens projecting onto the highly polished reflector panels which line the housing.  This is one of the most efficient designs I've ever seen.  You can see where the retaining screw is located on the bottom of the trim ring.  This is idealy, where any other replacement ring would secure - one would assume.

I backed up a little for this shot. The driving lights will be replaced in a couple of weeks.  They will better match the headlight in appearance and efficently improve illumination  while reducing power consumption.

This is the trim ring I ordered from JP Cycles.  I'll have to return it and find the right trim ring for this bike.  You can see the tab on the lower left (facing) side.

Any suggestions?  :confused5:

This is the $40.00 part from HD that allows for your garage door opener to operate after changing headlights.  The light will function fine without it, but you'd have to figure out how to make the opener work otherwise.  In my book, all well worth the cost of installation and still way less expensive overall than the competition.

The difference with this light illuminating the road and the sides of the road is remarkable!  I see things I've never noticed in the dark before.  It really illuminates road signs and any big critters entering the path.  It should be even better when the driving lights are installed.  The high beams are incredible and many times better than the spotty stock headlight.   Truck-Lite has effectivly elimiated the hot spots and underlighted peremeter areas.

Good lighting is a must. I travel to work every morning in the dark and  in my case the H-D leds help a lot.

Not sure if this will help you any or not as can't make a comparison between the phase 6 and phase 7 lights.  If they're identical or very similar in dimension the Harley trim ring will do what you want to.  Have the phase 6 light on both the 05 and the Road King with the Harley trim ring on both.

The dimensions of the ring and headlight work very well with each other.  The ring in this picture has been powder coated but the dimensional pairing of the light and ring are still easy to see.

Heads up on the wiring harness for the G/D opener and cigar lighter: The three prong plug that the headlight plugs into was not a very tight fit on the male plug on the headlight one I bought. After a couple of months it worked loose enough that the headlight flickered one night. Pulled the fairing and the darn thing was almost completely unplugged. I don't know why there were no locking tabs on that plug like all the other molex connectors. As a safety precaution I put a small wire tie around it after it was plugged back together. Went ahead and wire-tied the other end of the harness as well. While you're making light upgrades you may want to consider the new wiring harness that gives you independent control of the passing lamps, lets you decide if you want them on in conjunction with your high-beams - P/N 69200441. Good luck with it, you'll feel much safer riding after dark with those LED's.

Hey hey, cool. You got it mounted. Looks great and waiting to see what you wind up with for a bezel. I haven't looked yet but I reckon I should. Good job Brudda!

Good info on the wiring, I'll have to do the same and do want independent control of the spots. I remember reading about that awhile ago, thanks for the memory jog.

Thanks Wayne and the head's up TinSpinner!

I'd really like to have it where the driving lights are on on simutaniously with the brights.  I was not aware there was a harness for that too.  I've got a wiring diagram that I pulled off from another site, but no information about a harness.  I'm wondering, will it work with the one that is in place now?

Also, I noticed the lack of locking tabs on the HD harness.  What dummy forgot those???  I'm going to take some velcro ties we use in Telecom work and loop them so the plugs wont pull apart.  Thanks for the head's up.  The plugs are very tight and hard to insert or remove, but I can see over time one of them working loose.  No way do I want to loose a headlight when riding at night.  A very dangerous situation indeed.

The new harness plugs in and provides power to the passing lamps with no problem. I have the same bike you have and it works perfectly. The access is tight where the connectors are located but with a little patience and persuasion you can separate the connector and put the new harness in place. It is located inside the right fairing support to the left of the radio if your in front of the bike looking in, you have to look for it but it is the only one that is shaped like the plugs on the new harness so its not too hard to find, just a pain to get your hands on and unlock. You don't replace anything with the new harness, it just plugs in between the female and male plugs you separate.

Just figured out why the trim ring didn't fit.  It's the trim ring for a Dyna.  Okay.   :dunce2:  Guess that'll teach me to read the fitment details closer.  I just got off the phone with JP Cycles and the right one is on the way!  Part#3100356  FRENCHED HEADLIGHT TRIM RING $29.99.  Shipping is 11.00, so it ends up being just under $40.00 to your doorstep.

This is the link to the part, if you want to order: http://www.jpcycles.com/product/3100356

The headlight was purchased from a vendor on Ebay for $249.00 + shipping.

Thanks for all you info.  Justa question if we/you need(ed) a load thing like what is needed with the turn signals?

No, not for the headlights or the spotlights.  They're not monitored by the TSM/TSSM (or monitored by anything else for that matter) like the other lights are.
