transmission noise in neutral
« on: April 01, 2012, 05:49:29 PM »

Has anyone else had a lot of noise coming from the right side of the transmission . If you pull in the clutch it gets much quieter. The bike is a 2012 Street Glide with 1100 miles on it.

Same deal here, somewhere on here i posted the same question. Read a few post down.
Apparently Harley says it is normal. I figure it is under warranty for 2 years. So drive it like you stole it and turn up the stereo!!

Harley has put out a Technical Service Bulletin to it's dealers indicating this noise is something they call neutral rattle, and it is normal according to H-D.  Take that for what it's worth.  While it may be normal under Harley's latest policy of cutting corners and allowing much wider tolerances for parts, it doesn't appear to be acceptable to an awfully large number of customers.

The noise is caused by the backlash in the gear set when the bike is sitting in neutral with the clutch engaged.  When you disengage the clutch, the input shaft of the transmission slows and stops, and once it does there is no movement in the gear set to create that noise.  It probably will never cause a problem, but it can be irritating.  Have you done the first fluid change yet?  If not, change the fluid in the trans to a good 75w90 gear oil rather than the motor oil that's in there from the factory.  That has seemed to help lessen the noise for a lot of people.

Mike,

My 2012 SESG did the same thing, too.  Changed to Redline ShockProof at first oil change and the noise went away.

I'm still bothered that it had the noise to begin with.   :nervous:  I wonder if any damage was done that will come back to bite us in the backsides in a couple years?    :nixweiss:

Highly unlikely.

I think that H-D calls that noise the "natural rattle", I believe they have patent rights on that sound.   :deal2:

. . . very common unfortunately, indeed.  Just because it's happening on a large number of bikes doesn't mean that it's normal!   :furious2:

There is a huge difference between "normal" and "acceptable".  Harley doesn't care what we think is acceptable.  If they can make extra bucks pizzing us off with cheap parts and cheap designs, that's all that matters to them.  Sadly, enough people accept this sort of treatment that Harley can get away with it.  When people finally get fed up with being treated this way and stop buying the products, it will change.

If you go back to 2007 and the fiasco known as the CVO110, Harley was also telling people all those problems were "normal".  Only when the huge number of failures made it impossible to cover up did they finally do anything, and even then they called it a product enhancement in the interest of customer satisfaction, not the recall and admission of defects it should have been.  And of course they never did address the "normal" crankshaft wobble, other than to increase the allowable tolerance by 400% and then institute a severe throttle limiting software solution to keep folks from applying too much torque at low speeds and twisting their cheap crank into a pretzel.  Same thing when they started having a ton of brake rotor problems; blow everyone off first with the "normal" BS, then come up with a bogus runout spec that is four times what the industry considers acceptable.  Get used to it, it is obviously the way the current management intends to shore up profits and executive compensation.  Let the next generation of management deal with the fallout.

btw, in the case of the neutral rattle they most likely have a valid point that it won't do any harm.  But that still ignores the fact that it bothers a large number of their customers, and they have made no effort since they released the Cruise Drive trans to eliminate the irritating noise in order to satisfy the customers.  I never expected they would.

Mine does it, and I switched to a 75/110 Amsoil, and still heard it.  Took it in and they put in an 85/140 and I still hear it.  Put exhaust on and the noise went away, lol.  Well I can't hear it anyhow.  I figure I'll try to break it over the next 23 months and let Harley deal with the fallout.

Update = I replaced the tranny oil with Redline Shockproof for a piece of mind. I only get the noise when the bike is hot after an all day ride. It probably happens all day long but I only notice it when I pull into the gaarage.

This is typical of the motor company's policy to let "problem components" continue to stay in operation on your bike as a financial gamble as to if it will make it to warranty's end.  Then when it takes a dump, it's going to be on your dime.  The warranty is best suited for the high milage rider over the weekend rider because wear comes from use.  I've seen here many that have very few miles per year of ownership but the warranty clicks off daily.  I believe that H-D knows these sounds or noises aren't normal but believe the parts will hold up through the 2 years warranty and are willing to take the gamble that they will hold up. That is on most of those lower milage bikes that are out there. I mean really, some bikes only have 5 or 6k on them by the end of two years.
