How long do you ride?
« on: April 11, 2012, 10:18:45 PM »

I just returned from a 620 round trip over 2 days.  I rode 3.25 hours without stopping which is the longest I've ever gone.  Normally it's around 2 hours.  I realize this question depends on how good your gas mileage is but was curious as to how long you ride without a break?

Most of the time it is how far I can stretch 5 gallons. It was a different story with the stock 2006 seat we had, then 1 hour was too long. With Marty and Van we have done 600+ for a Sunday ride. Slept well for two days, getting to old for this stuff.

I ride 3-4 hours until I stop for fuel then keep going for 1000-1300 miles per day. If my wife is on her bike with me, we hold it to 600-700 miles per day. When we went to Harleys 100th, we rode 9500 miles in 5 weeks visiting Niagara Falls, down the east coast, Blue Ridge Parkway, then zigged our way back home.

Little over 600 is the most I've ever riden in a day. We stayed in the saddles for a little over 3 hours this past weekend on our 12 SESG's.  Butt was in a bind when we made that stop ;D

No iron butt here!! Love to ride but after an hour and a half to two I gotta walk around about 10 minutes and I'm ready to go again. Last summer rode 1200 miles in 5 days in Colorado and New Mexico, stopped and seen a lot of stuff, fought thru 2 big thunderstorms, Royal Gorge, Coors Brewery,Million Dollar Highway, and much much more. That ride was fantastic!! Would love to just take off for about a month like that but $$ and time are a factor!!

We have a "loop" here in the Interior part of Alaska that I get on and ride every "Million Mile Monday"

Fairbanks, Tok, Glennallen, Wasilla, back to Fairbanks.

Depending on side trips along the way, it's 830 to 870 miles in one day... best time for 873 miles was 18hrs flat.

I'll ride until the low fuel light comes on before I need to stop for a quick break... but then getting back into the saddle is like I've just started all over again.  Amazing how a 20 minute gas stop can totally refresh your system.   8)

Guess a lot depends on the agenda. Typical local day rides range from 200 to 400 mi. Interstate riding on a road trip 400 to 900 mi. Back road riding on a road trip 300 to 500 mi. Personal best so far is 1425 mi in 22.5 hrs.

We've done home to Sturgis many times straight thru...just over 1100 miles.  Generally with long trips if we're heading for a destination, 700-900 miles is typical.  But if we're riding thru scenic country, we stop frequently and absorb the sights and take in as much as possible... :2vrolijk_21:

Depends on the ride. On a normal Saturday it is a stop every couple of hours. If we are on a week + long trip it is every 3 hours or so and usually are looking for scenic rides so cap it at around 400 miles a day. The most I have ever done is 1026 in a day. That was part of a almost 1600 mile weekend.

I believe the question was:

... how long you ride without a break?

with me that depends on weather, type of road and distance to target  ;)

On German Autobahn at 100-120 mph I need a break after 1- 1 1/2 hours, that's usually time for refuelling anyway.

When travelling on a country road in decent weather I like a coffee stop after 2-2 1/2 hours, especially if the scenery is boring, if it's cold or rainy earlier.

And on a typical Sunday trip around home we stop about every hour for small talk  ::)

Hahaha 2 funny, me too, at least on the highway part of the ride :D
I do this no matter the weather except icy and/or snowy roads. I have only missed 2 days this winter, unusual to say the least, and I also try and do all my errands after coffee. If I can spend this much time on my bike for the rest of my life, well, I will die a happy man. I grew up with a scooter as my primary ride and more often, my only form of transport... I used it to ride and think through problems, to have fun, to learn to take risks, to... well, everything... I live that way a lot today, in the moment, using my gut to guide me. It re tunes ME!!  :D
But to answer the OP, it depends on who I'm riding with. With my wife, it is about 150 miles before she needs fuel in her CanAm three wheeler. Without her, probably 200 miles or so before  I gotta have gas, unless I'm with the guys and we are in a hurry...
