Leak when 'fuel line' plugged into 'check valve'...help!
« on: April 14, 2012, 07:47:29 PM »

I had the tank off to run some wires...I had taken out the fuel pump fuse and ran bike 'til it died, so it had the pressure relieved properly. It came out easily with no binding.

After hours of work, the last thing to do is hook up the fuel line, put in fuse, check for leaks, covers and saddle bag replacement...10 minutes tops.

After giving the it a thin coat of oil, I plugged the 'fuel line' into the 'check valve' and after seating and having the collar slide back down, it leaks badly. It seems a bit looser than I remember....both vertically and sideways.

I think the extended warranty should cover it...but the Indy shops don't want to do the HD extended warranty because of the short hours allotted for any given job. I have major reservations about my local dealer. To get the bike to a dealer on the mainland and back will cost more than the parts. Then I need a HD tool (48646) as listed in the manual (No I don't mean the front suspension that that number brings up). Maybe just buying both parts and the tool will ensure that it is going to be resolved?

From what I have read in other threads on the topic, there really are viable options other than replacement.

On my bike I've had that fuel fitting leak without warning on two occasions, both of which required my disconnecting the fuel line and making sure there was no dirt or other debris (doesn't take much) that would prevent a good seal.  Both times the problem went away without my ever seeing anything obviously wrong.  Do the same as I did and see if the leak goes away.  Doesn't seem likely the fitting could just go bad.

There is an o-ring in that fitting. Good chance damaged it.
You can see it with a mirror and flashlight.

Had to replace the male end on the wife's bike.  First couple of times you could "fondle" it and make it quit, but it finally gave up completely.

The brake cleaner and anti-seize might be beneficial if the actual mechanical part of the coupling is sticking and not allowing the fitting to lock in completely, but I don't see where it's going to help if the problem is the o-ring.  Do yourself a favor with this safety related item; get a light and magnifier/mirror or whatever and closely inspect the o-ring.  Springing a leak with pressurized fuel while riding is not something you want to experience.

If the o-ring has been damaged hd-dude wrote recently of a Harley part number that can be used to replace it.  Mother Harley herself doesn't offer us a part number for that o-ring and prefers we spend more money for the complete fitting.  hd-dude is a shop owner so wouldn't have posted without some positive experience about the option.  I've also rummaged throug an o-ring assortment pack and found something that worked before.  But Jim's (hd-dude) option is probably easier to do.

An HD 11273 case dowel oring works fine as a replacement for the check valve oring

Have you tried that yet Don?

I asked Jim to verify and he did not respond to the picture I posted. The 2 o-rings are a different size.

No Duane.  Haven't tried the o-ring Jim mentioned.  Do trust Jim though.  As written above said that Jim had recommended the part number but that I'd previously used replacements from an assortment pack.

As have mentioned to you previously, however, have used a ring from a large assortment pack (have done this twice actually) that has worked without issue.  I know; the assortment pack came from Harbor Freight and is, therefore, to you a spawn of Satan's sphincter shooting o-rings.  But it has worked.

Although some might say there is often a need for one additional plug on occasion...   :)
