Worth switching to 2-1?
« on: April 16, 2012, 06:45:00 PM »

Hi, my name is North Star, and I'm an exhaustaholic.

I was considering switching from my combo of Fullsac "b" head pipe/Rinehart 4"/Fullsac TTS map to a Drago 2-1 pipe and a custom dyno tune by a top tuner in PA.

If you havent heard of the Drago pipe, just pretend its a D&D- similar performance.

I wonder if its worth the $1,500 for the pipe and custom tune- how much better off would I be? Is it worth the $1,500?

Looking for opinions, thanks.

If you have $1500 to burn, I'd suggest burning it on something much more likely to give you $1500 worth of actual performance or pleasure.  I don't see a pipe change fitting that criteria.

What exactly are you expecting from this proposed change?  Major power increase, not likely.  More noise, possibly.  Then you have the appearance factor.  Do you really like the "naked on the left side" look of a 2 into 1?  Some do, but I suspect most don't.

Anyhow, there is no easy answer to your question.  Let the folks around here know exactly what you want to accomplish, and I'll bet you will get some excellent advice.  If you're looking for a big increase in power, however, you need to reevaluate the budget and revise it upward.  A simple pipe change won't do it.

harley exhaust is 99.5 % looks and noise - and .5% performance.

the stock head pipe with a good muffler will work just fine at any legal speed

that said - its your money!!! put on a different pipe once a month and have it retuned each time. do whatever turns your crank! have fun!..

then put the old ones on ebay for the rest of us to play

With the ghost pipe, I'd be looking at around $1,000, but I'd sell my used exhaust system locally, and would get most of that cost back ($750-$800 in the Cdn market).

The dyno tune at JD's Cycle Works is $450.00, plus the cost of him installing the pipe, as I would have it shipped to him.

Although my bike runs very well, my goal would be improved low end, less throttle lag, and after having the dyno tune, I'd know the bike would be running the best it possibly could. Less throttle lag would be accomplished by the tune, plus I have the impression a good 2-1 spools up the engine quicker for better response.

I think I may be justifying doing the dyno tune, by adding a performance mod to the bike because I don't want to just get the tune, then an exhaust later, and have to get it re-tuned. Just trying to kill two birds with one stone, if I'm making any sense.

I thought about doing a drop in cam along with the tune, but I think I'd be better off doing a whole engine performance/freshening up in a year or two. What I mean is if I were to do cams, it would be better to add the .030 gaskets but then the heads have to come off. Well, if the heads are off, I may as well do the headwork, and since the heads are off, I may as well pull the jugs to re-hone and re-ring, etc, etc.

Another reason I'm looking to add a performance mod to go with the dyno tune is that after buying all the parts to do the 31T/30T mod (all gaskets and Gates belt), I think I'm not going to go ahead with it after all.

I say 31T AND 30T because I have both pulleys sitting in my garage  :annoyed:

Just a bump- I know Faceracer recently did the Dragula and said he loves it, so maybe he can give us an update, and maybe even some video clips  :2vrolijk_21:
