Cuthberts,

Here is a better scan. Hopes this helps getting you warranty.

geezerglide
Thanks

no one is contesting the warranty issue on the failure, just the overnight cost of the parts....
like 30 bucks...no biggie
I must say to avoid confusion, GJ HD has been very very good to deal with,, they are not my home dealer but treat me like we are old friends...the Service writer, techs, sales staff and management are very very helpful....  i am only concerned with the long term issues if the "salvaged" part fails later....and they are documenting that in detail

Wow Scot what a story.  Thanks for posting.  I am going to check mine out before I head out to our Yellowstone/Sturgis ride.  Reports like yours make this web page so valuable.  Sorry to hear about your trouble.

Bob

PS:  Was there any sign other than vibration noise like volt meter fluctuation before the failure?

Bob,
The volt meter is like the rest of the gauges, it's way to slow to react to pick up any voltage variances due to the stator wobbling.  You'll only hear the grinding.  My stator went last year in Atlanta and the only thing I saw/heard was the volt meter was reading 10 volts - obviously after all the damage was done.  The only thing to do is pull the outer primary to check the compensator nut.
BTW, the Yellowstone/Sturgis ride is a great one.  We did Yellowstone in '98 and Sturgis in '99.  Both are most excellent places to ride!  Have fun!

Id have to second Arctic here.... once its busted you get lots of warning..... the only thing could have been the "grinding"; it started at CC , but only on the hills....  it became somewhat more noticeable as time went, but again, only on the hills..just so happens the last three days before it went were nothing but hills....... :-?

If your compensator nut starts to back off.......it will happen even quicker on deceleration.  So if you suspect it, try not to down shift on the move and try not to use your motor to slow you down......instead, just use your brakes with your clutch ingaged.

This same thing happened to Jonga on our Quincy ride a couple of months ago.  He was able to make it to the closest dealership (about 30 miles) after Marvin and Jim speculated as to what it was that he was describing (noise wise).

It's so true Scot, a guy knows it's not a good thing when his nuts are grinding.  But knowing what to do about it is a whole different thing.....

Asked the dealer yesterday if they check the nut on the stator during any of their service intervals.  He asked why?

I said, I was hearing horror stories.  I wanted to know if he had heard of any.

He said there have been some problems but as a rule they don't check it.

I said I was going to check mine out

He said if I do I will break the lock tite seal.  Just wait until I hear a noise and bring the bike in to get it checked.

I said Okay.

I'll be checking this thing out Saturday.  What a bunch of spooks.

Footnote:  When I had a metal slapping noise under the bike, four of these guys rode the bike and three of them said my after market air shocks were topping out.  (Not)  One guy say immediately that the motor mount was going bad.

Don't feel too bad Scot.  It's not uncommon that the noise comes on gradually enough, and occasionally enough, that by the time you've convinced yourself you're really hearing a problem something is already torn up.  Just one of those things sometimes.

At the last Gathering in MV Mr.We had what I was certain was the same thing going on but, if memory serves, his ended up being loose hardware holding the stator in place.  A bolt or bolts were eating up the rotor from the inside.  All in the area though.

So yours started to act up CC and his at the last MV.  Guess that means we get one of these at every Gathering?

Ok, picture this!  You are roughly 350 miles from home, 560 miles from your actual destination, with a couple of friends, and your bike can't go any further.  It is a Sunday - all dealerships in your reasonable vicinity are closed.  You leave your buddies, limp a different direction - as JC says - try to never decel - to a dealership, who is good enough on their 1 year anniversary extravaganza, to put your bike in shop and fix it for you and send you on your way.  5 hours - forgot $ - mostly under warranty.  What did  Just wait until I hear a noise and bring the bike in to get it checked.
