Mayday: Dealer Baffeled by Fault Codes: P1150 & P2135
« on: April 25, 2012, 06:49:50 PM »

I need some CVO Harley brain power!

This pertains to my 2009 SERG but may apply to all bikes with the electronic throttle by wire.  Several times last week and once a couple of months ago, the bike abruptly has gone into ETC Forced Management Mode (Max about 25 mph with very little power) in the middle of riding or upon starting.  That is quite hairy in traffic.  Surprise!  Dealer can't replicate the problem though it happened to me on the way to the dealer for them to look at.

Bike shows these Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC):

Code:                   P1511
Fault Condition:    Throttle actuator limited power management mode
Priority Order        91
Solution:              6.23 DTC P1510,P1511,P1512

Code:                   P2135
Fault Condition:    Throttle position sensor correlation error
Priority Order        44
Solution:               6.31 DTC P2135,P2138

Turning the ignition on and off 3-4 times seems to temporarily rectify the problem but is obviously not a solution.  Once when that did not work, I pulled and reinserted the main fuse and that seemed to work for a while.  Dealer says it may be a loose wire but I have doubts.  Bike has been in the shop since last Friday.... I'm not happy.  Wish I had more facts.  Otherwise, the bike seems to run fine.

I tried the search function here as I thought I recalled some discussion on this a couple of years ago.  No luck.   Ideas?  Thoughts?  Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any thoughts....  I need to be in Parkfield next week!

Isn't this the same thing that happened to Chip that was discussed in this thread - "Limp mode" and how I got there and left it in La.? I was trying to search for it earlier but couldn't get a hit until you posted the attachment and I searched posts with "corrosion" in it posted by Chip.

ETC connector terminal fretting, as noted in the attachment from sadunbar.  This was very common in 2008-2009, and I'm amazed a Harley shop isn't aware of it (ok, I'm not really surprised at all).  They need to not only just disconnect and reconnect the connectors, which may work for a short time, but they need to closely inspect the terminals  and replace any that show severe fretting.  When the connections are all clean and good, then they need to apply the dielectric compound and put it all back together.

Seems to me a bunch of '08's had a problem with the accuator and corrosion on the contacts. Yup, just searched here for the fault codes while writing this and seem to have been a problem. (at least on the '08's) Good luck Greg!

Greg,   I had the same issue after replacing my bars.  That TGS must be a moody individual.  Funny thing is, I could clear the codes, hook the SEST software up and watch the throttle position go perfectly from 0-100%.  Although everything ohmed out and seems to work as intended, the codes kept coming back.  Computers are evil.  If I were you I'd make the $90 plunge and be done with it.

Good luck

 ;D

I KNEW I should have consulted the board first!!  I could have fixed myself!  Thank you all! BTW, spoke with Jim at Metal Dragon and he said the same thing.  I called dealer to relay suggestions above and will get the bike back in the morning!  Thanks again and I'll report result after a ride or so.

The part about this that fry's my butt is that it is now three years since Harley was well aware of the issue, and yet they have not to the best of my knowledge made any attempt to get the affected bikes back to make the fix on a proactive basis.  If this crap had happened in the auto market, you would have seen a recall.  Having your engine go into limp mode while out in traffic is a safety concern, especially on two wheels instead of four.  Once again we see Harley getting a free ride compared to the rest of the industry.

Update:   Bike seems to be fine after some riding this past weekend.   Jerry is on the money with this one.  (No surprise.)  After keeping the bike for five days and putting 50 miles on it "road testing."  The connector seems to have been the issue.  Dealer applied some dielectric grease and problem has not re occurred.... yet.

Now dealer complains about who is to pay for it's time!  Bike is under extended warranty...   While I have a good relationship there, I'm thinking they should get stuck here!

I always love it when folks who are getting paid to know all the important stuff about our vehicles (or home mechanical and electrical systems for that matter) think we should pay extra because they don't know what the hell they're doing and it takes them many hours to perform a 15 minute "repair".  There is no excuse for a franchised Harley dealership service department to not know about this problem, all they have to do is read the bulletins Harley sends them.  And if that fails, a call to the tech hotline would have probably resulted in being pointed to the same bulletin Scott posted.

As to who should pay, IMHO that would be between Harley-Davidson Motor Company and that clueless service department.  Yes, the bike is out of warranty.  BFD!  They should have done a recall or service campaign to fix this before it failed, and it is definitely a defect, not normal wear and tear or lack of maintenance or customer abuse.  They should pay and be grateful they avoided a lawsuit that might have resulted if their crap had caused a crash.  They can argue with the dealer about how much they should pay for their incompetence, but the customer shouldn't pay squat.
