« on: April 26, 2012, 07:59:00 PM »

Thinking of doing cvo 110 upgrade ,the pistons are std bore so i was wondering if i buy new cylinders are they ready to install or do they have to go to machine shop?My bike has 5200 miles on it now dont know if the cylinders are worn too much to put new pistions in?

From the right supplier, it possible to buy cylinders ready to install - preferably purchased with pistons as a package...

Or in necessary, you could bore your current cylinders .005 or .010 oversize - with oversize pistons, of course...

I wouldn't trust a set of cylinders right out of the box from Harley, if that's what you're thinking of doing.  They don't have a very good track record for accuracy on the 110 cylinders, especially in terms of taper.

If you have an excellent machine shop available to you, having your existing cylinders bored to the next oversize would be a much better idea IMHO.  Order the pistons in the next oversize, not the standard bore size, and have the machine shop bore and hone the cylinders to fit those pistons.  I'm pretty sure that won't be a problem with most dealers, they can swap the pistons in the kit with a set of oversize pistons, no big deal.

btw, I don't understand why you want to buy that kit.  Since you already have a TTS MasterTune, you don't need the SEPST that's part of the kit.  Why not just price the parts you actually need, like the pistons in the appropriate oversize, the cams, the pushrods, and the gasket set?

The HD machine work can be dead nuts accurate, that is before the parts are heat cycled in normal use then all sorts of things can happen. Nothing says your nearly new motor has any issues without measuring to determine the fit of the pistons. With those few of miles I doubt there is any cylinder wear, distortion that's another story, measuring (with torque plates and good gauging) tells that story

I agree with Don,  just bought a set of 4.060 cylinders two weeks ago and check for taper with clylinder bore gauge,  less than .0005 taper from top to bottom of the cylinders   :)

Rereading this I don't think it was made clear that you must be going to new different pistons higher compression I am assuming.
If so a hone is needed and IMHO knowing that I would bore & hone and get 1st OS pistons
Never seen a set of the jugs clean at STD. with torque plates installed and still have factory recommended clearance.

:2vrolijk_21:    That was my thought process as well Don.  Even on a low mileage cylinder, I would never install new pistons and rings without cleaning up the bores.  And I'd never trust H-D's parts enough to just install them without measuring them.  Sadly, a lot of Harley shops have been doing that for a lot of years, like when they install big bore kits.  Straight from the box to the engine.  I was always a proponent of just overboring the stock cylinders rather than buying those big bore kits, btw.  That's all those cylinders in the kits were, overbored versions of the stock parts, and it was cheaper having the stock jugs bored locally.  Boring and honing the original used parts also helps eliminate some of that variation from heat cycling you mentioned in your first post.
