I agree , glad rider is OK but I don't understand the thought that cameras prevent accidents.....There were cameras there but the accident still occurred. Cameras like police officers just document the fact that the accident occurred.
Cheap fix for many intersection accidents is to make all 4 ways go red for a few seconds before letting any light turn red. This allows intersection to clear. I know the jurisdiction and camera companies wouldn't make money  that way though.
We need to get people to treat driving as operating deadly force and needs our full attention...put down the cellphones etc. Until they develop full auto pilot with accident avoidance technology.

NOTHING will prevent ALL incidents (I don't call them accidents, that seems to diminish the guilt of the jackass who caused the crash), but when people realize they will be ticketed religiously when they blow through an intersection with a camera system, it does reduce the number of folks who purposely try to beat lights.  They don't, of course, do anything for the brain dead azzholes who text while driving or engage in other stupid behavior.  They seem to have made a difference in Chicago.  Of course, there is a downside to the systems as well.  Most are actually outsourced to companies who install and monitor the camera's for a cut of the take.  We've already seen cases where unscrupulous folks have changed the timing of the yellows (shorter) so they can generate more tickets and revenue.

I'd like to point out to all those folks who refuse to wear helmets that this guy basically survived only because he was wearing one.  Watch how he lands directly on his head, then think how a bare head would have faired.

But somebody will take issue because the "media" reported that the biker survived because he was wearing the proper gear, especially the helmet, and the media is evil incarnate...

Bets ya a dollar the red light runner was either texting or talking on cell phone, more than likely texting......  My prayers are out to the MC rider that he has a quick recovery,   I hope he has good health insurance and understanding employer to deal with all time of he needs to recover...

Its that time of year folks keep your head on a swivel though this poor guy didn't stand a chance.  The white truck in the left turn lane blocked the view.
Thanks MasterGunner!

Wife and I were sitting in the turn lane at an intersection in rural PA on Saturday.  Light had been red for a good 2-3 seconds when a black Ford 4x4 blew right past us through the light like it was nothing.

Sitting in the gas station after a break, same intersection watched another car blow through the same intersection from the turn lane.

There's lots of ID10Ts out there and some of us will end up hurt.

Back in my youth, I was one of those folks who would time the light so I could take off the split second it turned green.  These days, I don't move for several seconds after the light turns green, and then only after I have checked both directions for any vehicles that don't appear to be slowing down.  I've had many heavy trucks around here blow through reds while I sat there with the green waiting for them to either stop or blow on through.  It's BS, and it's why I fully support the red light camera programs.  The only thing I don't agree with is the size of the fines and the penalties imposed in most jurisdictions for blowing lights.  A violation that can very easily result in death and destruction on a large scale should certainly result in more than a couple hundred dollar fine and a slap on the wrist.

You hit the nail on the head with that comment, waiting an extra second or two after the light changes can be a life saver!
