Trans Cover Nipple
« on: May 10, 2012, 07:00:45 PM »

The black cover that goes over the nipple on the trans cover fell off. I knew it would because when I clean the bike it falls off. Do I need a cover or does anybody have a better idea for a cover?

I bought a replacement at the local hardware store, & hit it with the heat gun on low to fit snug, good to go now

It's the cover for the hydraulic clutch bleeder screw/valve. It's purpose is to keep dirt/debris/moisture from getting into that valve and possible letting fluid out/air in. Is it something you have to have... I've seen many w/o them... for me I feel better with having it... guess it's going to be what your comfort level allows.

BTW - Here is the P/N & Description - 43817-02 Harley-Davidson CAP, BLEEDER SCREW $2.85

I would think something could be found cheaper at a hardware store that would work just as good.

You remember what section/department you found them in (search for "rubber nipples" not helping me much at Lowe's :D)?? Might be worth keeping some spares if the price was right.

d00d,

I rode to my local Ace Hardware, asked for different size caps of what they had for bleeder valves & picked which one fit. I purchased 2,, memory serves me they were under a buck ea.

Go to an auto parts store.  Ask for selection of vacuum nipple caps.   Lots of different sizes.

Lowes has them in those bin drawers with all the nuts and bolts stuff.  You get a packet of 4.  Forgot which size it was though.  Works great.

They probably have some to cover the antenna studs as well.

Lowes calls them Bolt Protectors.  They are sold by thread size (8,10,12,1/4 etc)

After I had 2 to 3 removed from people in need I did the heat gun with a small amount of silicone that was heat rated. I thought I would just take one off a bike at a dealership and much to my surprise someone beat me to it, they were always missing.  After talking to the parts guy he gave me 2 heavy duty ones that the service dept. installs when the bike's that are sold go out the door.  Seems they had a number of them removed so they went to the automotive supply house and solved the issue.
