Cams for older 103's
« on: May 16, 2012, 11:10:45 AM »

I have read a lot of the post regarding Cams. Seeing that new components come out on a regular basis I will ask for some fresh input.

The dealer is rebuilding my 2003 SERK/RG From the bottom up as you may have read in my WTF post. I was fairly happy with the stock 253 Cams but I am told they are more of an emission friendly Cam. I also have the SE mufflers, Air Cleaner and Race Tuner.

When I upgraded to the Hydraulic Cam Plate last summer it was highly recommended to do Cams. After a lot of suggestions and research I went with the Red Shift 575 by Zippers. From day one I was unhappy with lifter noise. I did like the increase in noticeable power but it wasn't worth it.

Now I will never know if the noise was just due to the Cam design or an improper install and at this point I don't care. Due to the fact I had a catastrophic failure, the dealer is doing a complete rebuild.

So the question is what do I have them put back in?  I ride two up most of the time with a full load, Tour Pak Bags and now the RG fairing.  My priority is quiet lifters and torque. If need be I will go back to the 253. I wanted to do with the 255's but they won't fit my motor. I hate to go backwards. When the motor goes back together I could use a different head gasket for a little more compression. The Dealer is recommending 211's another is suggesting Andrews 237's

You all have been there and done that so any fresh input will be greatly appreciated.

While I know they don't get the press that other cams do I would suggest you take a look at Yuill Bros out of Reno, NV.

In my 06 SE 103 I run the Yuill Bros YB13 Gear Drvie Cams.  They also make them for chain drive.  I love the cams & they are quiet.  Now I have some additional work done in my 103 and they make 104hp 114tq.

At 10.0 cr, an S&S .570 shows a real flat, broad torque curve.

Eglider

Thanks but dealer is paying for the cams and I'm sure they will want a set with a warranty from a dealer.

X2 :2vrolijk_21:  Many of us on this board used these cams back in 03-06 and we all got similar numbers.  Dyno sheets are all posted somewhere on this forum.

x3 On the yulli bros cams. The 103 still runs pretty strong. Plus those yulli bros are good guys to deal with. Any questions call brad :bananarock:

I have the yb13's in one of the pumpkins and with added headwork it makes 115 hp / 117 torque and that is with 60k+ miles on the build.   Been a problem free build from Day one.  (Hope I didnt jinx it now doh)   The difference though in using the 570 and the YB13 is the YB likes a little more compression than the S&S 570.  With the 570's don't recommend over 10 to 1 compression with it and to my ear the 570 is a little noisier.

No head work on mine and it was relatively trouble free for 60,000 miles, pulled just as hard when I sold it as when this was done.  That's the reason that many of us went with the Yuill Brothers cam.....no head work required.....plug and play if that's what you wanted.  Or, you could do the head work and get even more out of it.

yes mr D they are low compression as the chambers were 94/95 cc's on those.   The stock the 253 cam was only 530 lift.   Would think if you didnt want the torque at 3000, that you could consider the 204 harley cams as another choice knowing they run from about 1800 -4800 rpms then die off.

Just depends where you want the torque curve and where you ride.
