simple oil change question
« on: July 30, 2006, 03:01:52 PM »

Who has figured out how to replace the oil filter during an oil change without making a mess and having oil drip from the oil cooler cover for a day after oil changes?  Is there a simple tool available to capture the oil that escapes when removing a used filter?

Well there are some tools out there and a new oil filter capture release valve.

Most guys that i know cut a pepsi 2 liter bottle  (they like coke so they don't destroy those bottles ) hehe  and use it to place under the oil filter and walaa no mess and easy to deal with.

There is a new backplate / part that I am pretty sure was a post on the site not long ago about a plate that goes on where your oil filter attaches that makes it easy to remove the oil like a release valve / hose.   Hopefully someone else will post the link for you.   There is also a jack out there that you can buy that has an oil accessory to help solve this.   It was listed under one of the jack threads.

When doing the plastic bag trick, be sure and use something like a good ziplock bag as the flimsy grocery store bags tend to leak.

The cheapest way is to use the box that your filter came in and tear it so you can place it between the filter and the engine case. Then remove your filter with a drain pan under it to catch the run off. After a minute or 2 you can install the new filter and remove the box and discard it. I have been doing it this way for years.

A piece of tin foil works well as well.  Strong enough to hold it's shape, yet easily bent to fit whatever you're working on.

The Aussie Way

1. Remove filter & throw in bin
2. Wipe up any excess oil
3. Fit new filter & fill with oil
4. Run & check oil level
5. When engine cold (2 -3 hours later) spray on some degreaser & hose off
6. Bring out the garden blower & dry off any excess water.
7. All clean dry & looking good!

Cheers

Jerry....you'll like the freezer bag "trick"...I've been using that method about 10 years now and have never cleaned up a drop of spilled oil.  Was in the back of the HD shop last week and about lost it when I saw one of the old time techs slipping a ziplock around the filter.  Couple of years ago he was razzin' me about needing a bag to catch the oil....tech's didn't.  Guess he reinvented the wheel......

I think the 07 bible has a new type of filter designed to eliminate the mess.
check this link out.

pretty pricey though.
kng103,

I think I can buy a lifetime supply of freezer bags for a lot less than $270.

This is how I remove non-counterbalanced TwinCam oil filters without making a mess.  The following procedure works best with the motorcycle on the kickstand.
I loosen the oil filter to the point it can be turned by hand without breaking the seal to the filter mount.  I place a rag under the filter above the front motor mount.  I then place an oil filter drain tray part# DS-310249 available from Drag Specialties for $16.95 MSRP under the filter with a small container under the spout of the drain tray.  I use a long phillips screwdriver to punch two holes in the end of the filter, one at the bottom for oil to drain, and one at the top to allow air into the filter.  Once oil is no longer coming from the bottom hole, I loosen the filter until the seal is broken to the filter mount.  Make sure there is a gap between the drain tray and the filter so oil does not backup and overflow out the back side of the drain tray.  When oil is no longer draining, remove filter.
The oil filter drain tray was designed for non-counterbalanced TwinCams with bolt-on oil filter mounts.  The notch to clear the oil filter mount will need to be enlarged to clear non-counterbalanced Twincams with integrated oil filter mounts such as 2006 Dyna's and all 2007 non-counterbalanced Twincams.
This may not work with certain oil cooler adapters that attach to the oil filter mount depending on how the hoses to the cooler are routed.

I use a piece of a 12 pak beverage container, it's thin enough to slide up under the filter and let it drain off into another waiting container, then throw away. My way of recycleing. [smiley=drink.gif] and it's free.
