Cowboy, as Jim stated, once you have them on and you turm the steering, you will see where the deflector hits the fairing and you just start trimming away. It's hard plastic, so you might need a Dremel. it is what I used. It has helped alot on decreasing the wind coming form in front of the gas tank for sure.

Thanks Alremc, maybe that will help the problem.  At least with all that air going right up my nose, I don't have sleep aptnia while riding!!

Snooper, after reading all these posts I would like to add my humble opinion. First of all check the simple things like some of the guys have mentioned.First of all tire pressure, and wheel bearings(front and rear),make sure the rear wheel is in proper alignment, steering head bearing adjustment( I think you already did that). I remember the first time I rode a bike with windshield and I felt this pressure pushing my helmet around from the back. No big deal. Then I realized it was the vacumn created by the windsheid, and the air going over the top of my helmet and whipping around to the back of my head. I have to say that if you ride on the highway and especially if there is a lot of traffic around especially big trucks and car carriers, add a little cross wind to that and you will be experiencing exactly what you are trying to get rid of. It is part of riding in traffic. If I am on the freeway and no cars or trucks are around me I don't experience any abnormal turbulance or buffeting. After all you are on a motorcycle exposed to the elements, not in a car. My 09 is stock, I have ridden on many 4k mile trips and I know what to expect especially when the freeway is crowded  or it is windy. Just my opinion. I have been riding since 1969. Take it for what it is and enjoy.CAHDBIKER

Snooper,

I am 6' 4" and don't really notice anything with the wind due to my height with the stock set-up on my 2012 CVO Ultra.

However, what I do notice is a VERY significant "softness" in the front end at highway speeds just like you described.  We ride 2-up probably 98% of the time and the bike is very well behaved at all speeds, and all road/traffic conditions.  But coming home alone after the 1,000 mile service, I accelerated onto the highway and quickly got up to about 70 where I nearly sh%t myself because the bike felt very unstable and felt like it was going to go into a high-speed wobble.  Backed it down and it was much better at slower speeds.  Rode later that day with the wife and it was stable at the same speeds where I felt uncomfortable before.  Tried it again solo and it was all over the place.  Dealer has been all through it, but says it is all "within spec".  We went from a 2007 Ultra to this bike, and in 30,000+ miles on the 2007 never had an issue like this.  For now we are chalking it up to the differences between the two model years (new frame, wider tires, nitrogen, etc).  I really don't like it, but since we almost never ride solo, and it is fine with both of us on the bike, it is ok for now.

Hello everybody !

Ok guys, I might need your help / advice on this one.

First let me tell you that I searched this website and couldn't find the info. Gona try to make it short: when I did the test drive of the Ultra, everything was perfect. Got to say that I previously had an XL48 plus a RT1200, and I wanted to make just one bike that could sound like a HD and allow us to ride long trips just like on the BMW. The 2012 CVO colors and schemes and accessories had me signing for this model, but I only did a test drive of the Ultra Classic - non CVO.

Now after a few hundred of miles, I still have a big smile, but a few complains, or at least some questions.

1/ Turbulence. I tried different helmets, but I have to say that there is annoying turbulence above 60 mph. My passenger does not feel any of these, but up front it's really painful. I'm 5'8 so I'm not sure size matters on this one. Anybody experienced this before ? I drove 4 hours during the non-CVO test drive, and I did not notice anything comparable to the bike that was delivered to me.

2/ Front wheel… above 50 to 60 miles an hour, just as the turbulence's start… I find the front wheel to be very… soft, fuzzy, moving, imprecise, sensitive even to the wake turbulence of the trucks next lane, etc… feels like a big lack of precision. Once again, I did not get this feeling when I did the non-CVO test drive. On another hand, I come from BMW, bikes you can put on the desired track no matter what. But really on the Ultra, I find it strange - but I have no background on this model to understand what's going on.

Thanks for your help, and sorry if this was posted before...

Have a great day !

I've read through all of the replies to your original post and I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in...  For the turbulence issue, I have noticed a bit more on my 2012 CVO Ultra than on the 2010 version.  It could be my imagination, but to me, the top curve of the '12 windshield looks "flatter" to me than the '10 version (or the non-CVO shield).  You'd really have to do a side-by-side or trace the outline to be sure, but that slightly flatter curve might mean just a bit more air is hitting the top of your helmet.

As for the "squirreliness" on the front wheel, I experienced much the same feeling with my new Ultra.  If I was behind a vehicle on the highway traveling over 50 MPH, it almost felt like I was riding on a greasy road surface.  Any crosswind or "bad air" coming off the vehicle in front of me made it feel as if the front wheel could skitter right off the road.  But, as I went above the 260 mile mark, I noticed this feeling subside quite a bit.  After a few more miles, the feeling seems to mostly have gone away.  I took a look at the front tire and I noticed that on the tread portion of the tire, there seems to be quite a thick coating of a waxy substance along the outsides.  Perhaps this coating was intended to "protect" the tires from oxidation during shipping/storage.  After traveling enough miles, the coating has worn off of the center of the tread, but is still there on the outside edges.  Just a guess on my part but I could certainly see that once the tires got warm and you got the bike up to highway speed, the result would be exactly the "greasy" feeling I had experienced. Take a look at your tires and see if you still have a build-up of this coating.  As I put a few more miles on my bike, I'll see if the greasy feeling stays away...  (I certainly don't recall the tires on my '10 bike having such a thick layer of stuff on the tread - there was a bit of "mold release" on the tread when new, but not this waxy stuff...)  Anyway, just a thought...

Alremc,

Got them installed.  Had to do a little trimming but I really do think they help.  Here are a couple of photos:

I felt the same thing on my 2012 CVO Ultra and not the standard that i test road in Myrtle Beach during bike week.  I caulked it up to the different wheels and tires on the CVO vs Standard.

I have that same uneasy feeling on my '12 SEUC.  Adjusted the neck bearing fallaway, put a Progressive cartridge front-end on the bike, added that triple tree wind deflector, even removed the adjustable wind deflector from the fairing.  While each thing made it a little better, I still had the underlying squirreliness.  Today I went to Jim's (Metal Dragon) to do an experiment.  We took off the front wheel and tire and installed a stock StreetGlide 17" wheel and tire.  The bike is perfectly stable, like a different bike!  Put a different front tire on my wheel and the instability was back.  Obviously, there is something about the chisel wheels that causes the twitchiness/uneasiness/squirreliness.

I intend to go by the local dealer and explain the issue as well as today's experiment and see what they will do to correct the issue with different wheels, but I am not having high expectations.  You would think that when you buy a $37K+ motorcycle, it would at least feel stable and safe!  The $25K ones do.

When I'm traveling I use a fairly large tank bag on my 06 CUSE that has the magnet flaps that go over both sides of the tank. I've noticed that it significantly reduces the amount of updraft that you feel coming up towards you. I've even used it on cold days in town just to stay warmer.

I am not talking about breezes hitting me.  I am talking about the bike not feeling stable at highway speeds.
