Texting & Driving

If you have teenage kids driving this is a must watch for them.  Although they will say it can't happen to them.

We can preach, preach and preach and 'some idiots' will continue to text and use their cell phone while driving >:( .   Why not push to pass a few laws (at federal level) whereby cell phone manufactures are mandatory to include circuity to disable the cell phone while the phone is in motion,, maybe something like above 20 mph and maybe add an option where the cell phone would operate if a hands free device were attached.. Yes, most of us will have to make some sacrifices but a simple idea could force the 'idiots' from using their cell phones while driving, killing people at the same time. lets hear some ideas  :nixweiss:

I agree with cvo biker.  The cell phone providers, along with the user,  have be held responsible for any accidents or deaths resulting from texting or cell use/abuse while operating a motor vehicle.  People can watch all the video's ever made about this topic but they think it'll never happen to them.
They're killing us out there.  Something has to be done.  They can make laws, we just passed one in Ohio, but if they're not enforced or come with a very low fine what good are they?
The technology must exist to shut these things down while a vehicle is in motion.  If the providers get hit hard enough with lawsuits maybe they'll finally do something.

Problem with shutting services down while in motion is the mass transit folks and non driving passengers. I know I would be none to happy not being able to use my phone while car pooling or riding along with someone else while they're driving.

I do however believe that manslaughter is manslaughter regardless and if someone is texting while driving and they kill someone they should have the book thrown at them.

I agree with above statements about having the cell companies changing peoples habits to improve safety by having a 20MPH cutoff for phone and texting service.

I know I am from the baby boomer generation and we didn't have phones in cars growing up.......guess what we were OK! We could also reach authorities if an emergency came up by use of a payphone. So in modern times why not pull off the road to make an emergency call?
I know we as a society can survive even if we are disconnected from our phones, text messaging and Internet while driving. I remember the days when the passenger's job was to navigate, watch the kids, and to help keep the driver awake.
As motorcyclist we know that motor vehicles are deadly force and everyone needs to remember it before something tragic happens.

Excellent video. That poor gal will have to live the rest of her life with the blood of her friends on her hands. On Thursday I was almost taken out in my car when a driver in a white Toyota Land Cruiser ran a red light and violated my right of way. As she rolled on through, I could see that she was texting.

My wife and I just the other day was following a car you would think had a drunk driver. When I got the nerve to pass in the left lane the lady was on her phone! Must have been dialing when all the weaving was going on? Then she was driving about 40 in a 55. Sometimes just talking on a phone while driving can distract you pretty good!!

First time I saw someone on a bike using a phone at the same time was about 18 months ago.  Just floored me.  An entirely new and uncomfortable concept.  Have seen it several times since though.  Familiarity breeds... well.... more familiarity.  Seems so wrong though.  Will admit to reaching in the painters pocket on the jeans while on open stretches of road with plenty of room ahead to slide the phone out long enough to check to see what time it is.  Then slide it right back in.  So I guess I'm questionable also.  But watching people talking or even dialing while riding is a line that's been crossed that scares the hell out of me.

That's why we need laser cannons on our bikes. Vaporise 'em before impact. Ok, stupid idea...but only cuz it hasn't been invented yet in a portable scale. I just forwarded the video to my friends along with comments, we'll see how lit up some of them get.

For some reason, people now think they must remain in incessant, constant contact with all the people who they think they need to be in touch with.  It's BS.  Being a slave to whatever communication device is ill advised, IMO.

I will check my cell phone when I stop for gas, if I remember to do so.  I do have it paired with my GPS just to know if a call is incoming and who it is.  Unless it's a family member, most everyone else gets ignored until I feel like I want to talk to them...and even family members know not to call me unless it's important.

The texting thing is becoming even more of an issue than just talking on the phone.  Put an 18 year old in a 3,000 lb cage with a smart phone, and it's a recipe for eventual disaster to someone.  The only way to stop it is to start ticketing them, but it's hard to catch.

Write them up with a reckless driving ticket. In most states that is only second to DUI/DWI.
The insurance companies will take care of the rest. A cop can write RD tickets for about anything that is dangerous.
