banging noise when starting
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:07:45 AM »

Hey everyone. I have a 2011 SESG and when I go to start the bike, when the starter engages to the transmission there is a loud bang noise and usually won't turn the motor over. I release the start button and try it again and then it will start. While riding yesterday it happened again and now have a constant noise coming from the transmission (louder in neutral). Only has 4600 miles on it. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

are you sure its coming from the trans? sounds like it could be the compensator going out (also check your tune,if your timing is too far advanced, that could have caused the problem to begin with)

I have a Thunder Max tuner on the bike which i though will adjust the timing automaticly. I do not know how to check the timing.

I suspect you may be hearing your compensator...  A bad compensator can cause your symptoms.

Interesting. My FLHXSE2 has started doing same thing since I had a Thundermax installed. Usually when it sits for a while. Not only clunks but engine dies. Will start up after it happens, but this is worrisome to say the least. Ive got 20K on mine. At 15K I changed from a PCIII to a Thundermax, but did not have this problem until about 19K. Might be a compensator. I've been blaming the Thundermax.

dp with hearing your story I would say the Thundermax is not supplying power to the ACR's. Just a guess but that is how a large motor will act if they are not opened!!!! Oh and don't ask me how I know!!!!! :orange:

I hold in the clutch lever when starting. It's easier on the clutch and starts easier. Works for me anyhow. Good luck figuring out.

I could be wrong but I think you will need a Power Commander V. not III. The V is what I put on my 09SEUC.

How did you resolve it?

I have one of the first Thundermax units installed on my 2004 so they are not the same unit. My motor has manual compression releases. So I have never had the problem with ACR's. But I do know what kind of noise it will make if I don't open them before starting the motor!!! It is still my guess that the Thundermax is not sending a signal to the ACR's all of the time.
