Oil leak by oil filter area ...
« on: June 08, 2012, 02:48:41 PM »

 >:(. Hello need help just bought my 2009 CVO  this year, the bike has started a oil leak I think it from the oil filter area. I have tried with my hand to tighten it but it seems to be secure. However  i wipe the oil off the bottom end and it leak again. Check the oil level but its where it should be full.

Has anybody else experience this?

Check the adapter that the oil filter screws onto Fred, it's a separate part that provides the ports for the oil cooler, and many of them came loose from the engine allowing oil to leak.  You may be able to just tighten the adaptor plate, or you may have to remove it and replace the gasket.

You may need to up the torque a bit to keep it from loosening again.

Mine needed tightening right after I did the 1K oil change.  No problems since.  It's a known issue on some bikes, even when brand new.

I don't know how Jerry pulls all these exploded diagrams out of his azz... :huepfenlol2: ;)

Just had mine replace while in shop for other problems. At 66 miles it started leaking again. The dealer mechanic stated that the machined surface is not as smooth as it should be.

Probably an optional part in the new Harley production system.  Or maybe one of those "temporary" workers they use now to replace experienced folks who lost their jobs in the last contract.

Just went through this. Had a hell of a time finding the leak. Replaced the thin paper gasket and all's good - so far.

While polishing ( :huepfenlol2:) Ziggy yesterday I noticed a drip of oil on the floor, then i found a mess around the oil fiter/ adapter. I cleaned around the adapter/filter and checked for loose hose fittings.. I took the bike for a ride, about 100 miles. Upon return I noticed oil around the adapter had come back.

After reading this thread, I am conisidering replacing the adapter gasket and possibly the oil cooler hoses as well.

As most know i have worked on motors but any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

And suggestions as to how i should go about it ?

Thank you

 Marty

I just noticed a drip on my 02 SERK Today.
Wiped everything up and checked again.
It appears that the drip is coming from the Oil Filter area and dripping onto my Oil Cooler Hoses, All the Oil is "On Top"

The last time I changed Oil I noticed that 26352-95A, Adapter, Oil Filter backed out with the Oil Filter. I always rub fresh oil on the new Oil Filter Gasket and Hand tighten.
Not sure whay that adapter backed out.
Any way, I tightened it up in 26013-03 Mount Kit, oil filter.
I have had No Issues with it leaking for the past 2,800 Miles.

Intend to pull the Oil Filter and check out the Adapter. Anyone know what the TQ Value should be?

The Oil Cooler Lines and Clamps have been checked as well since the last Oil Change

12-16 FtLbs according to the diagrahm posted by GRC.

I know I've had to re-torque the adapter plate on my bikes every once in a while, I usually give it a quick check at each oil change.

Many Thanks

Did some further checking and found that the Oil Filter was no longer tight. It has been fine for 2,800 miles
Hand tightened the Oil Filter again. Do not see any more drips.
Almost time for and Oil Change. Intend to check the Oil Filter Adaptor for correct TQ.

First time I have encountered and oil filter loosening up. Usually tighter than expected when time to remove it.

I found a slight cut from the hose clamp on the oil cooler lines on my brothers. Fought it for a week, before I cut the last inch off and reinstalled. Fixed.
