Update: Rebuilding 2003 CVO 103. Suggestions?????
« on: June 20, 2012, 02:06:45 PM »

I've been having some problems with my 03 SERK engine so I'm guessing I'll tear it down and rebuild it as it has 60K on it now and I plan on keeping it a long time.   Presently it's a 103 with S&S570 cams and an .030 head gasket--no other mod's.  I may also have the bottom end checked or rebuilt/trued if the runout is very high.  It was fine when the gear drive cams were put in at about 22K miles, but I don't know what it is now.  So I'm open for suggestions on what I should do.   I really don't want a race engine, just a good, solid street engine---but I want it to be a little more than a stock 103.  I'm open to some head work and possibly different cams but I think I'd like to keep the induction stock, unless someone has a really big reason to change that.  I do want gear drive cams unless there is a viable/price comparable alternative.  I just want an engine that performs somewhat better than stock but with a long life.  I'm not against just shipping the engine off to someone, but I don't mind doing the disassembly and reassembly myself and shipping the bottom end off to be updated/crank trued, etc.
So what all are your suggestions?   Even shop recommendations are appreciated.  I'm located in eastern Indiana but of course I can ship things anywhere.
TIA,
Steve

Over in your neck of the woods, contact www.larrysmotorcycle&machine, Oak Lawn, ILL, as with that cam, I'd suspect a good set of heads would be all you'd need, unless of course, you wanted to bore the cases and bring that up to a 117"er. :2vrolijk_21:

What type of power does it make now??

here is about as basic as it gets..

Our 107 kit, basic valve job, very little clean up work , a good ex system and the 54 cam and a tune..

T/B is stock, stock injectors, stock lower end.. The top end was bored and honed as it had been overheated a few times.

One thing I'm worried about is if the crank has slipped.  Can that be determined just by checking crank runout?  It was fine when I put the cams in but I haven't checked it since.

Just finished one at 103" 10.5:1 Tman 590. It made 114/125 and that was shut off at 5k per the owners request. It was on strong climbing at 5k and had a lot more.

How much to you think True Duals add vs and X-Pipe?

put the rear wheel off the ground & bike in gear,so you can turn the motor over, get a magnetic based indicator, using one of the cam cover scew holes, bolt a small peice of steel and check the run out (make sure the cam plate is off)

As soon as I get time, I'm going to do this so I'll have some idea of where I stand.  Then I'll decide what I want to do with it.  I certainly do appreciate all the responses and I'll probably be getting in touch with a few of you.

Just finished one at 103" 10.5:1 Tman 590. It made 114/125 and that was shut off at 5k per the owners request shot up over 100 at 2,300. It was on strong climbing at 5k and had a lot more. Peak torque was at 3,900 and it still had over 110 at 5k

I believe you are talking about my 103 build with the factory SE 103 heads reworked?

Yep that would be the one.
How does it feel?
Are you going to have a dyno pull done and take it to redline?
I know one thing for sure those heads flow very well, and in the right direction.

I am going to have it tuned to redline next week. I will update you with the results. You did an AMAZING jobs on my heads! I will let all my friends and anyone on the forum know that you do GREAT work, but I am sure you already have that following already.

Bike really runs great....  I know after "David Morley at Atlanta Harley Davidson" tunes it, the bike will run amazing, and produce even better numbers.

Skippy, a view point from a nobody. I'd bust them cases open and have the bottom end checked and repaired as needed then balanced, trued and welded. Not sure how many bottom ends really have problems but with a press fit crank assembly I'm concerned with everything staying true. Just my nervous Nellie mindset I guess.

I haven't had time to take anything apart yet, but I'm thinking the same way.  I want to keep the bike (long enough for my grandson to ride it with me-and he's not 6 yet) so I want it to last, so I'm thinking I should do that just to be sure.
