Pipes and tuning and such
« on: July 03, 2012, 11:50:10 AM »

Ok, so I've had my 2005 SEEG for about three weeks now and I'm finding all the little things that need to be done. I'll save the suspension questions for the proper forum but right now I'm dealing with pipes and air flow. Since this bike was used I really don't know if the previous owner did any tweaking to the ECM or not. The HD service records show nothing like that but still..?

So I installed Rineharts last week and the low end performance increase was noticeable. However, it did affect the cold idle characteristics quite a bit. My next plans include some changes to help with the massive heat issues while riding. I'm looking at going with the V&H dual header and the traditional looking K&N filter system. I want to retain the SE air filter cover so the heavy breather setup is out.

Explanations finished so here's my question. I know this is going to require re-mapping of the ECM but what is the best way to go? I know opinions vary greatly on Power Commander vs. V&H, etc. I'm just now getting familiar with what this bike has from the factory (Stage 1?) and what needs to be done. I'm just looking to make it slightly cooler and more tolerable to ride. I'm not planning on doing 150 mph or trying to stand the thing on the saddlebags.

The input from those of you who have already gone down this road is very valuable to me. I'd rather do this once and be done with it.

Tuners are like seats some like the HD race tuners, most on this site prefer the TTS Mastertune for it user interface. as in you can download map from there web site and up load it to your bike for your combination. It also seams that they have very good customer service. I have the HD unit didn't know about the TTS Mastertune at the time or probly would have gone with that setup. As for the using the factory air filter cover you can do it. I used the thick foam ring from an SE stage1 air clean kit "stage1 removes the back of the air box and moves the head vents" and stuck it to my Zipper hi flo filter and it has work for the last 15k miles. Hasn't loosened up or moved. As for the cold idle mine is cold natured as well. Pipes, airfilter, and tuner helped with the heat but its still hotter than my 03 Roadking with a 95in in it. there's only so much you can do to cool these things off.

Roger that smkblwr, it seems the 103's are just heat generators. I think I'm going with the HD Pro Tuner. A couple of friends I ride with have used it and really like it. And the tuner tech I plan on using is most familiar with that one as well.

I just found out from Steve at Fullsac that I will have to change my oil pan in order to use their cross under pipe. Crap! Nothing is easy with these bikes. Oh well, gotta look at more head pipe options or find a later model oil pan I guess.

DoubleTap, nothing's ever easy hahaha. I run the D&D 2into1 pipes on both my bikes. Boss Fat Cat on the Ultra and the Fat Cat on my 03 Road king
