I don't like that you have to drill holes in the TP to install this. Not sure why, just don't like the idea.

I'm not sure why, either.  There's already a million holes in the TP from the factory ... on an Ultra, anyway.  What's 8 more?

8 more is nothing unless on drilling hole 7 the template slips!

And who's fault would that be?

There's no template, you just put the pre-drilled plate up to the TP.  Tape is your friend!  Drill the first hole or two and then put screws in them before you drill the remaining holes ... no chance of slippage then! :2vrolijk_21:

I got mine on today.  Works great.  I noticed the small anchors holding the stock  plate on the lid were already loose. I'm glad I got rid of the tether. Install was easy.  Pop rivets the way to go.    Seems to me the supplied screws would loosen up.   That's why I went with rivets.  .

Hi Stu,

I'll be installing the Ultrabrace as soon as my new bike arrives. I like the idea of using pop rivets. Did you use aluminum or stainless steel rivets?

Thanks,

Joe

I used aluminum.  Seem to work fine.

Got mine done last night. Using the included screws for now.

As the instructions suggested, I placed my lower bracket closer to the hinge side so it would open a tad more for the TP light.

Sorry the focus is off. I buy these expensive cameras that are supposed to do all the work and I still suck at taking pictures!

C'mon Rob,,,   I found a rivet gun at harbor freight for 6.00.    Definitely the way to go.   :2vrolijk_21:

Not have installed one of these in the past, I tried to make sense of the instructions, installing near the same place as the original but on the opposite side. I thought the instructions could be much better. The measurement of 3/4" below, I also wasn't sure where to start from so I used the edge of the TP. I see in Rob's photo it looks 3/4" below the body line. I notched the hinge stop allowing the TP lid to open more, wish I knew more before I drilled, like I do now. The directions also make no reference to where to mount to the lid. The upper mount I guess I could have moved closer to the hinge as well. Nice pictures Rob.

Friend with '11 RG Ultra had the retractable tour-pak lid tether break last week.  Luckily he was in his garage and has to park his bike pretty close to the side wall.  So when the cable broke the passenger backrest on the lid contacted the wall and prevented the lid from going all the way over.  No luggage on the lid.  He has just opened it to put something into the tour-pak.

These things look very flimsy to me and I have never been impressed with them.  I may install the standard non-retractable cable on my bike.  It is a lot beefier.
I had one on my Road Glide Ultra and never had a problem - BUT - I didn't have a rack mounted on it so there was never weight on the lid, and I never just threw the TP lid open.  I was pretty careful with it as I'd heard stories about them breaking and didn't want it happening to me.
