SIX SPEED TRANSMISSION FOR CUSE
« on: August 13, 2006, 11:26:15 PM »

I did a search under "SIX SPEED TRANSMISSION" and didn't find what I was looking for, but I'm sure that I'm probably asking questions that have already been answered somewhere.  I did 1086 miles last Tuesday and had a lot of time to think about a six speed.  I'm curious about a couple of items:

1.  I'm at about 2800 to 2900 RPM when I'm doing 70 MPH and about 3000 to 3100 RPM at 75 MPH.  What kind of changes would I see with the 6th gear?

2.  Has anyone got info on improvement in fuel economy when running in 6th gear?

3.  What kind of cost should I expect for the six speed tranny?  Cost for the transmission?  Hours of labor to install (I noticed 7 hours in other threads)?

4.  Has anyone actually had success in selling the five speed tranny after installing the six speed?

5.  What kind of warranty issues or concerns would there be in going to the six speed.  I've got an extended warranty and I imagine that the tranny would have been covered if I had added it before picking up the bike.  If I change out the transmission, I assume that I'd only have a year?  Two years?

As always, the input will be appreciated!

I just checked on the SE 6 speed gear set and SE tranny side cover required.

I have the SE 6-speed on my CUSE. First, IT'S GREAT! I do about 2800 @ 75mph. I did sell the stock 5-speed, here on the site. I think I got 300 bux for it if I remember right.

Thanks for the input.  What's the warranty story?  I probably should have gone ahead with the six speed when I bought the bike.  If I add the 6 now, do you know how long the warranty is good?

I'm thinking it's 90 days.  That's why I decided to put mine on at delivery and have them cover it for two years. Although I'm not sure if it would be covered on the road or at another dealer.  Never thought to ask that question.  I guess a computer check would show it installed at delivery.  ????

The attached chart will give you an idea of the rpm vs road speed between the stock 5 speed, the SE 6 speed, and the SE 6 speed with primary ratio change.

[smiley=nixweiss.gif] Help me understand why anyone would spend $3K plus for a six-speed? My CUSE 103 is turning slightly less than 3K RPM's at 70 MPH. It's hardly working. If I had a six-speed I'd be at 2500 RPM's at the same speed. That's close to lugging the engine plus you'd absolutely want to downshift every time you needed to pass. Isn't the maximum efficiency (torque etc) of the 103 seen above 3K RPM's? I guess it might save you 20 or 30 cents per tank in increased fuel mileage....... that'll take a while to recoup the investment. Let's buy more chrome instead!

ez,

I've expressed that same sentiment in the past - in my opinion, the stock 103 "sweet spot" is in the 2500-3000 rpm range.

WOW,

I actually thought I was the only one that felt that way.  I would think that a six would be ok if it came with the bike, but there is no compelling reason for me to get it now.  I even love the seat that came with it!?!  After all those OCD dollars spent there by others I feel like the Lone Ranger there as well.  [smiley=cowboy.gif]

I guess my "need for speed" threshhold is lower than most....at least not all though!  I'll just drive with five....

Love my 6 speed and it is great at the speeds our group travels at 70-90.  It was on sale so ended up costing about 1500-1800 for the gear set installed.

Well there are a few reasons....it didn't cost me $3K plus....having it done before delivery (and getting 20% off accessories at purchase time) I only paid ~$2K installed..........I tend to run the interstate alot because I travel on the bike for work....I've always looked for 6th gear in previous bikes....now that I have it I haven't looked for 7th once.....it just makes everything seem right.........while the bike may have a sweet spot over 3K rpm that doesn't mean that there is nothing below 3K...it still has power there and is capable of using it.....even at 60mph on secondary roads 6th is very usable for me.

I'll never have another bike without 6th gear....and I guess now that the MoCo has gone to em for everything that'll be much easier to accomplish.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
