My other concern with the Avons is that the recommended rim width for the rear tire as shown on their website is 5.50-6.0 inches- on the 2009 SERG the rim width is 5.0 inches  :nixweiss:

I'm not sure why a dealer would have to "check the date code", since a defect is still a defect regardless of when the tire was manufactured.  If the original tires installed by H-D are somehow too old and out of warranty per Dunflop for instance, then H-D owes you a tire for installing old crap on your new bike.  Regardless of who ultimately pays, Dunflop or Harley, Harley sold you the bike and needs to stand behind what they sold.

btw, you can easily check the mfg date yourself.  Look at the sidewall near the rim and find the line of text and numbers that starts with DOT xxxxxxxxx.   At the end of that line you will find a four digit number.  That number indicates the week and year of manufacture.  For instance, 1209 would be the 12th week of 2009.

I had the same issue with cracking along the rim on my 2011 CVO Street Glide.  Dealer covered it under warranty at 17k, but just bearly as I was at the wear limit on the tread.  Dealer said if I would have been under the tread limit, it would not have been covered.

Full replacement, less than 50% worn, then prorated.  Full tire life is defined as 1/32" remaining tread depth, at which point the tire is considered at the end of it's life and there is no further warranty.  For details, follow this link:

Dealer put new tire on bike and charged me half  said tread averaged 3/32 i figure fair enough because the tire sidewall was not safe. I wish michialm made the commander 2 in sizes to fit my bike.

So we had a nice day here finally and I rode up to the closest dealer to show them my sidewall cracks on my front tire. He said it was normal just the lip in the tire mold!!! WTF Jackass!!! Needless to say I won't be doing any business there. Next nice day I will go to the next closest and continue until someone pulls their heads out of their butt!  :nixweiss:

The medical term for that is Rectal Cranial Inversion! I had a faulty Dunlop installed on the rear and it was wobbling. I had a kid at the dealer tell me it was my imagination! I had been riding longer than he had been alive. After 3 attempts for them to fix it I ended up at a dealer that told me immediately it was a faulty Dunlop. ???

The front tire on my 2011 FLTRUSE had to be replaced at less than 3000 miles only the dealer said it wasn't covered under the warranty, even though I had also purchased the H-D extended warranty. To top it off, I told them I wanted to see the old tire and when I went to pick the bike up, they couldn't find it. Needless to say, I was extremely pissed.

On another note, from the day I got the bike whenever I brought it in for service I complained that it sounded like there was a 'high spot' on one of the front brake rotors because I could hear it rubbing on the same place as the wheel rotated. They blew it off and never did anything about. Now at 12000 miles they're telling me the rotors are warped and have to be replaced....and of course that is not covered under the warranty either. And this is a different dealer after the tire issue.
Not impressed with H-D warranty service... at all!!

I too do not like the Dunlops.  Had front tire on my RUSE replaced due to sidewall cracks.  Service manager took one look and said 'we will replace it.'  No questions, no drama.  Then on same bike he replaced my rear tire due to cupping - no questions, no drama.

Now on my CUSE7 I took it in Tuesday for new rear tire 'cause I found a nail in the tire.  Usually ride with ear plugs but did not this time as was only about 20 miles.  About 40 mph could hear loud howling noise.  After tire replaced the noise was gone.  Tech said rear tire was 'chewed up' by cupping.  Only 8k on that tire.

Spoke to JR later that day and he too has a badly cupped rear tire on his CUSE7 with only 8k on the tire.

I'd like to try the Michelin Commander II but dealer does not stock them.  Maybe could special order.   :nixweiss:  But then again my concern is if I should have a flat on a road trip most likely would have to be replaced with the Dunlop and don't know if Dunlop and Michelin would mix or not.   :nixweiss:

I would put the michelan comm 2 if the made the size to fit the rear tire, they just brought out the size to fit the front, i would take my chances on the road. What about the Metzler ME 880 anybody have milage numbers?
