Harley Variable Clutch
« on: September 03, 2012, 01:48:38 AM »

Has anyone looked into this yet? Harley just came out with there version of a variable clutch and I was wondering if it would help that much with the hydraulic clutch?? The main reason I'm asking is that I pull an american legends trailer and thought it might help some will pulling a load.

I'm not 100% certain however I thought it was a version of slipper clutch. If you were to downshift hard it slips the clutch and doesn't bounce the rear wheel (this is what my 1125R Buell does).

Riding the other day I didn't see a change in the way the bike works in regards to the clutch. I'll pay attention to it the next time out.

Haven't seen any real details on torque capacity, but since they mention reduced lever effort I'd guess they reduced spring pressure and rely on the ramps to increase clamping load as required.  The cut and paste attachment is from the 2013 New Model Tech Info from Harley.

i think hes asking about this

Screamin' Eagle® Variable Pressure Clutch

Get more performance from the Original Equipment clutch. The Screamin' Eagle® Variable Pressure Clutch is designed to help put the added power from a Screamin' Eagle® Stage Kit to the pavement. This bolt-on kit harnesses the centrifugal force of spinning weights to increase the clutch capacity as engine speed increases. The mechanism applies increasing pressure to the stock clutch pressure plate as rpm rises. The result? High torque-handling capabilities without increasing clutch lever effort at idle. The Variable Pressure Clutch also provides smoother clutch disengagement at lower speed. Kit fits behind most stock derby covers with no modifications. See installation manual for additional accessory derby cover fitment information.

Hmmmm, hadn't seen that one.  I wonder if they bought it from AIM and had them paint the weights orange, or if they just appropriated the design? ;D  It appears to be an exact copy of the VPC from AIM.

We have a bunch of folks on the site using the AIM VPC, so if that's what indcoltz is looking at then there should be plenty of feedback.

Surely they have OEMed the VPC from AIM. AIM has patents on it...

All you have to do is change a few minor things and you can get around patents. For all we know this company may be producing it for Harley. OK I did go ahead and purchase it and I can feel some seat of the pants difference, not anything WOW but it does feel a little more crisp on throttling up and the downshifts seem to be effortless when pulling in the clutch. I pull an American Legends trailer and I was hoping this would give my clutch a little more bite when accelerating hard. I'm sure Jerry and Naitram will have all the scoop on the thing in a couple of days. Probably should have waited until they checked them out first. Thanks for the responses guys

Harley's version of this mentions nothing about decreased clutch pull effort.  One version of the Aim-VPC claims 40% reduced effort in clutch pull.

The decreased effort in clutch pull would be what I was after.

My questions are-does the Harley version decrease clutch effort enough to purchase?

Does the VPC-Aim 40% reduced effort version worth it?

Thanks-Bob

Ken...

The CW may not work on CVO touring bikes as of yet. Too much spring tension loss on the pressure plate and may cause clutch slippage. This is more geared for people that ride easy and have issues with their hand strength like me.

Softails, Dyna and Tri Glides work fine if you are less than 100 HP/100 TQ. Touring bikes just don't have enough spring pressure. Now, if you have a 400 lb + spring it should be fine. Got a guy with a 480 AIM spring and a plus 1 clutch with a 120 in his Ultra that smokes the rear tire. Has nerve damage in his hands and can pull that 480 with two fingers now.

Anyway... I know the rules about advertising.... will stop now. Just wanted to give a caution here.

You're a good friend Ken... thanks but I must respect the site rules though.

I've gone through two on the bikes I have.... tossed them in the trash after about 10,000 miles. The pressure point of the clutch spring finger destroys the rear fulcrum and the lever pull reduction and friction zone goes away. When my friction zone collapsed I pulled it out for inspection. That's how I found it.

I have been running the AIM VPC for about 1 year. It works great!!! No slip and even better engagement. Best of all significantly less pressure to engage clutch. I would recommend to anyone that has issues with hand strength.

There's a much better alternative to the VPC now - either AIM's or the H-D one - and it won't wear out in less than 10,000 miles with a lessening of the reduction in clutch pull lever effort, as I experienced with the AIM VPC 70T I had until recently on the Honey Badger.

It's called the ClutchWiz, a new product designed to reduce the clutch pull effort like the VPC. You can read more about it at http://ClutchWiz.com. Designed by Mr. Wizard here, it's a quite amazing little product! Several meaningful testimonials.

ALSO, with the power we make with our CVOs, we need to run the ClutchWiz with a 480 lb clutch spring - which I got from AIM (ironically), for $50.

SO... for $135 (shipped) for the ClutchWiz, plus $50 for the 480 lb AIM clutch spring, you can have a really nice clutch set up that is very easy to pull. We measured the clutch lever pull with the ClutchWiz and the 480 lbs spring at 9.8 lbs max... which is very easy to pull with two fingers. Details on my Mods thread starting at this post: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=66236.msg1069313#msg1069313

I am also installing a "+1" 10-plate clutch kit from Energy One today (along with the Hayden M6 BT07 primary chain tensioner while I'm in the primary) - because even with the massive 480 lb clutch spring, I can STILL slip the puny stock H-D clutch on the Honey Badger in full-on speed-shifting pulls. Honey Badger may not care... but I sure do!
