Well, this is my first experience with S&S lifters but I'm beginning to wonder if it wasn't the wrong move. Started the bike this evening and it sounded like a JD A model. It was pecking so loud in comparison to the stock lifters that I was afraid I'd done something wrong so I readjusted the push rods but it is still noisy. I let it idle for several minutes at ~2k rpm hoping they needed to pump up but it is fiercely loud.
Have I done something wrong? Are all S&S lifters this loud?
Adjusted them to Zero lash then 4 turns(.1252) and let it bleed for at least 20 minutes. Backed them off until the valve seated(~turn and a half), then an additional turn.
If you didn't replace the cam plate and pump, it will take a while for them to purge the air and self adjust. The OEM pump and plate has trouble pushing the cold oil through the lifter valve system. Soaking the lifters in oil for a while (few days) helps with this.
I have seen people bypass all of this and just take them 1/2 to 1 turn past contact, then button them up.
