Sorry Rob Haggerty may have been involved with the rebuild, but the orginals were not built by him  See d00d's post above for the name of the real builder of these bikes. ( my CRs again, sorry d00d) He was a black man and was very much in the forefront of custom bike building in the 60's. Sugar Bear who builds outrageous springer bikes ( and is finally getting some press ) more or less apprenticed to him. I'm not sure if the color of the man's skin had anything to do with him never being recognized or not. I don"t believe that Peter Fonda is a racist, but your story above certainly raises questions. I had heard for years that the true builder of these bikes had been pushed into the dustbin of history, but could never track it down. I remember as far back as my first time in Sturgis in 85 listening to a couple of old scooter tramps argue it out in Gunners. Then a few months ago, Discovery Channel did a special on it hosted by Jesse James and confirmed the name d00d gave us as well as brought a lot of other significant and previously unrecognized names into the spotlight.

Big B
Big B,
Probably due to the time of this bike build (late 60's), state of our country (desegregation, civil rights, etc), and the color of these men's skin kept them from getting the recognition for this build. As for what Peter Fonda said/did in the post that Roger had I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he might not have even known who originally built the bikes. Again because of the timing of this build he may have never known where the bikes came from and was given misinformation.

Like you I watched the episode that Jesse James did (and still have it Tivo'd) and found out this information. I've always had respect for Jesse, because of his talents and his no nonsense attitude. He gained even more respect from me after watching this episode because of bringing this information out for everyone to be aware of. For any that may be interested there is another really good book out called "Soul On Bikes" by Tobie Gene Levingston that tells the story of the "East Bay Dragons MC (Oakland Ca.)" an all Black all Harley MC. This dates back to the same time period (early 60's/70's) and is still going strong today.

There is an exact duplicate of Fonda's ride in "Easy Rider" located at the Barber Sports Museum here in Birmingham, AL.

Mr. Barber has in-house fabricators/restorers who work in conditions much like a lab, so it is a really nice looking copy.

The story goes that Hopper's bike was never saved after the crash scene in the movie.

notice the loud mouth papa riding a harley.  probably because none of their own bikes run worth a sh_t.

met Jesse James a few times, real nice guy, talk to ya like he's known you for a long time . sign anything you want.

occ,,, they set up tables and charge you $15 for an autograph.  never stating as to where the bucks go(in their pocket)
wouldn't give a nickel for any of their bikes

Hey Ya'll...I have posted several replies regarding my June "04 trip by the OCC shop and the retail store which had just opened which I won't repeat here again except to say quickly in response to earlier questions. The OCC "Stealer" of choice is Moroney's H-D, ( The 1-800 Fast Hog People ). I stopped there on the way back from Nova Scotia and had just got my Pumpkin about two weeks before the trip and they gave me the directions to the OCC shop and retail store which is only about 5-10 miles away from Moroney's. They were super nice folks at the dealership as most dealers usually are. I was told at the dealership that no one would be at the OCC shop because they were at a charity event in the city but I could stop by on the way to the retail store and take a picture and no one would care. We pulled into the OCC shop lot, stopped and got out the camera and all of a sudden Jr. came around the back of the shop on the recently E-Bayed Road Glide with the apes and Sr. and his girlfriend at the time comes around right behind him on the Pumpkin...I was grinning from ear to ear to see Sr. on the Pumpkin.Turns out they were running late for the trip in the City and hadn't left yet. They stopped, got off the bikes and we hung around with them in the parking lot talking for ten minutes or so, (mostly about our new Pumpkins), before they had to go. His Pumpkin was still stock at the time and we talked about my mods I had made and about the numbers that Kendall Johnson had got out of my set up for me.They were real nice to me and the wife and seemed like perfectly normal folks. I have seen them be jerks to people at Myrtle and seen the way they act on TV but thats not my problem LOL....I'm glad I stopped by there and have some great pictures as well....My 2 cents....

Ran into the Teutul's 2 years ago riding Spearfish Canyon in South Dakota. Hung out with them for a bit at Bridal Falls. Yeah, they ride fairly stock looking Harley's. Guess they understand the nonsense they build is for bar hopping and not touring. Their personal bikes always have ape hangers though. It must be a trademark for their clan. Paul Sr.'s last ride was a Road Glide with black powder coated forks and apes. By the way, they were great, ordinary guys when away from the crowds. Nothing like the characters they portray on the Discovery channel.
