30t pulley with Andrews 57 or woods 222
« on: October 22, 2012, 08:17:52 PM »

I am looking for a little more grunt and for my Cvo to run a bit cooler. I am thinking of adding a 30t pulley and either the andres 57 or woods 222 cam as a winter project. I know both of these cams are relatively new.  Has anyone tried either with a 30t?  I currently have added the full sac sportpipe and some v&h HOs.  I also added the agitator ac kit so it would breath a little better and a super tuner with a canned map.  I plan on having it dyno'd once I swap the cam and pulley.
I am open to suggestions on other set ups. I do not plan on doing a piston swap on this bike.
Thanks in advance

I am running a 30t front sprocket with TMan 555 Torqsters, which are similar cams.  Perfect set-up in my book.

How much was your speedo off after you swapped the pulley?  Any chance you have a dyno sheet on that set up?
Thanks

The way it looks to me like the 57 comes on plenty late if you want low end grunt, the 222 looks the be one of the better low end cams. You may also give the TW 7H a look, SBB has had really good results with his, without a 30T. If money wasn't and issue I'd probably go with the 7H and 30T.  My Ultra my get a 222 this winter or maybe a 7H, only time will tell.

No dyno sheet as I tune with VTune and TTS by myself.  Dyno would be no different between the 32t and 30t.

My speedo was off by about 5mph at 75mph and I was able to set it true to GPS with my tuner.  As far as I know, only the TTS and Power Vision can correct the speedo.

A cam and/or a 30t sprocket won't do anything to lower the temp.  An oil cooler or fan could help, but  Cat-less pipes and a TTS with a good map or dynotune will do more to help performance and temp than anything.

I have a 30t sprocket, and there are trade offs.  You do get a little more low speed umph, but it will also increase your rpms at highway cruising speeds by a couple hundred rpms.  It's very noticeable here on SoCal freeways where traffic is always going 75+ (or 0).  Also, it alters the calibration of the speedo, so you'll need a good programer like the TTS to recalibrate your speedometer.

The 255 is a great cam for low end.  Somebody here had a thread about keeping the 255 and machining it and modifying the motor to get great numbers and keep the bottom end of the 255.  From Canada, I think.  Anyway i think that would be a good option.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose.

sesto123, I have been following the threads on changing the front pulley down to 30 teeth. I can't speak for anyone else, but my 09 seems to be geared just right especially when on the freeway doing 80MPH with passenger and luggage. I can leave the cruise control on when I hit a slight grade, if it gets a little to steep I have this novel concept called " downshifting " which I use on occassion. Then after I crest the hill, back up to 80 then reengage cruise control. I am not trying to be a smart ass, but I don't get wanting to drop two teeth off the front pulley especially if you are on the interstates where the speed limit is 75MPH. If dropping down to 30 is for local riding maybe I could understand it, but it doesn't seem necesssary to me. Just my 2 cents. CAHDBIKER

Thanks to all for the comments.  I should have included info regarding my riding style.  I do very little highway riding.  Most of my riding is spent on the back roads in the foothills of the cascade mountains.  3-4th gear and 3000 to 5000 rpms.   I am looking for a little more in that rpm range.

Maybe a TW 7H or Andrews 57, ride awhile then decide if you want to change the sprocket. Look over posted dyno sheets find a cam that comes on just before you need it and last through your desired RPM range.

I posted one from Netherlands. It had head work and flowed 280 or thereabouts at .4 lift over 230 average.
With very quiet (european legal db) it made over 124 torque and had a 100 at 2,200.
I have the dyno but won't post it again. It was tested by a step test with load sensing transducers (Factory Pro I believe). Not an inertia dyno.

Even so that set up with the 255 still looked to have a great power..
dyno jet sheet or not..
Not run the 222 but the 57 made great power with a 30 tooth it would pull very well..

O ordered a 57 over the weekend.  Should be in late next week.  Should I also do a .030 gasket as well? Or leave compression at stock level.  I have the pulley and belt also.... Just not sure I am going to install it or not....

Thanks to all for the info.

I use a stock belt.  Jim at Metal Dragon in Hayward, CA (hd_dude here) lengthened the axle slot in the swing arm a few millimeters.  So far, it works great.  I ended up using the Andrews 30t pulley because of time constraints, but the regular HD 30t pulley works fine, to, for less money.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
