Saddle Bag Falls Off
« on: November 12, 2012, 02:16:21 PM »

I have a 2010 street glide. Back a few months ago i had a saddle bag fall off the right (throttle) side of my bike. We had just gone over some rough tracks so i thought chit something went wrong and it just popped off. So i replaced it and check it regularly now. Havent had any other problems with it. fancied both bags up put new latches on them the whole works.
Saturday Night the new bag on the same side came off again. This time there was no tracks or major bumps.
Has anyone else had a major problem with saddle bags coming off. I had heard that 2010 and 11 might be having a problem. of course the dealer and the dumbchit at harley who answers the phone probably for 8 bucks an hour denys there are any problems.

i did find an after market company who sells different pins but it will no longer be a quick release situation.

Thanks ahead of time for any responses

I have owned 3 Road Kings (one an SE) and have a '10 SESG. I have never had a problem with the bags.
Sorry not to be more helpful, but my experience is the rule, not the exception. Sorry to hear of your problems (it's expensive AND annoying), but can't offer a diagnoses.

Check your pins, they can get bent if they are hard to get locked.
Are you sure you are getting the pins seated, in the full lock position?
something is causing the pins to come out. Do away with the quick lock pins and use bolts instead.

just a though

Take a look at saddlebad secure by Brokus http://brukus.com/

I have installed these on my bikes and it's given me great peace of mind.

I also have bought extra to give out to my Buddies for X-Mas gifts  :2vrolijk_21:

Read too many comments on this and other forums where the bags have taken exit from the bike. I am not willing to take A chance so I made A bolt on system for cheap from the hardware store. ( U nuts and Allen head bolts ) Also A company called Brukus I think, makes A nice system. Look on here and you will find them. I don't want to be that guy that had it happen. No matter if HD says there is A problem or not!

How far do you tighten them down?  If I screw mine all the way in and put a little torque on them they smash the crap out of the rubber grommets they go through.  Will that eventually cause the rubber to distort or stress crack the bags in that area?

I use very slim stainless steel washers and have not any issues... I also recommend since we drive 800 pound vibrators, that we would be wise to check the connectors from time to time.   :2vrolijk_21:

Just put the Brukus kit on there and forget about it.  At least one of his bolts on each side...I use two on each side.  It takes about 2 minutes longer to get the bags on and off on each side, but the peace of mind from not having to worry about them either being stolen, or falling off, is worth the slight amount of effort involved.

I snug 'em down pretty good.  No need to bear down to the point of damaging the rubber gasket or hard bag  :o

Experiment, tighten them to a good snug fit and then reinspect after a long day out and see what they feel like.  I haven't yet found them backing out... there is a lock washer included for each threaded bolt.
