Oil Filter
« on: January 02, 2013, 08:03:04 AM »

I just started a topic on what to use for fluids instead of the Syn3 and appreciate the help. Coming here for advice is so much better than the drama on the HD forum.

So. I got to thinking that maybe there is a better oil filter as well than the stock Harley one. I just waded through about 20 pages on the HD forum and looked at their poll. It seems most still use the Harley oil filter but I think many people just do not think about using anything else.

So, in your opinion, what would you use for an oil filter and why?

And this is for a 2013 cvo ultra classic and I will be switching from the Syn3 oil to the Mobil1 V twin 20w50 oil

Thanks

I typically use the K&N oil filters or I'll use Harley's whenever I can pick up a few on a 20% sale.

The Harley filter is very good actually, so the decision really comes down to other factors.  Personally, I use the K&N filter with the 17mm nut on the end.  It's a very good filter as well, with the added benefit of being very easy to remove thanks to that nut.

The only definite recommendation I'll make is to avoid the so-called permanent filters on the market.  The ones I'm talking about have a metal mesh filter media that you remove and attempt to clean, then reinstall into a fancy looking outer shell.  They usually sell for hundreds of bucks and come with all sorts of bogus claims of increased power.  Any power increase is the result of less power being required to pump the oil through them, since they don't do a whole lot of filtering.

Thank you. I was leaning towards the K&N because of that nut.  :2vrolijk_21:

The K&N's are the only ones we stock here, for several years now.

What is the part number for the K&N filter and where is the best place to get one?
With the 4 bikes I go through oil and filters by the case.

X3/4 (whatever the number is :D) on K&N filters. As far as where to get them I order direct from K&N online.

Maybe U need to share that problem with another member to help U get the miles on the bikes needed to do these oil changes and perhaps helping with the cost of the oil and filter changes!!???
I might be available if needed???

KN-171B for black, KN-171C for chrome.  The same filter fits all Twin Cams from 1999 to present.  Do an internet search and you will often find specials on ebay motors or various parts places.  I bought my last four pack some time ago from Eastern Performance at a good price, but I haven't been in the market lately and don't know where the best deals may be.

Jerry

OK, you got my curiosity aroused so I did a little searching.  My old favorites are either out of business or have raised their prices, but I came across this place that seems to have a pretty good price, especially if you buy several.  They charge $9.95 shipping on orders under $100, and ship free on orders of $100 or more.  At $8.99 per filter, if you order 4 at a time you'll wind up paying $45.91 total or about $11.48 each.  Bump the order to 8 filters and you'd be looking at $81.87 total or
$10.23 each.  I have no first hand experience with this place, so you will need to perform your own due diligence.

I seldom post, but I do lurk on the sidelines - That said, I felt compelled to throw a wrench into the works on this topic.

I read all I could find on various filters when I was making my decision. That was 2005 or so and things may have changed since then. As I recall the HD filter has a 5 pound bypass valve, and all the others that I could find the information on were higher. Ten of fifteen pounds does not sound like a lot, but it is double and triple the manufactures value.

That said I know plenty of folks that swear be this or that filter, and have fine results. I'll stick to HD. Ride safe Tom
