Q.. Spare key.....
« on: January 27, 2013, 11:56:50 AM »

I have seen it is suggested to have a buddy carry your spare have it away from the bike, if not solo. Is it to do with avoiding battery drain of the spare? Doesn't  the battery drain on the fob stop once the motor is started?
Could be mistaken but I thought the fob power was only to silence the alarm. Or is something else at work?
It would be appreciated if any one could bring me up to speed on this.
Is there consent drain on the fob? After motor is running

Turn the battery upside down inside the fob. :2vrolijk_21:

Why flip the battery? What is the drain on the fob?

Why flip the battery? What is the drain on the fob?

The fob transmits all the time, that's why the battery lasts a very short time compared to the old push button fobs.  It is a good idea on the new buttonless style to change the battery on a regular schedule every year.  As for turning the battery upside down, you could also insert a strip of plastic between the battery and the fob, like many companies do with items that come with batteries installed.  They leave a tab sticking out that you can just pull out to let the battery make contact when you want to use the device.

Rather than leave a spare fob on the bike where it could possibly be stolen, why not just keep a spare battery on the bike?  And don't forget to learn how to use the turn signal switches and your secret code to fire the bike up if you do lose your fob.  I get the impression most folks don't think about that until after the fob goes dead or they lose it or leave it in the garage.  Do it now and put the card from the owners manual that details how to use the code in your wallet.

The first location that popped into my head was inside/behind the cow bell (horn).

   Thanks Jerry,

But I'm still some what confused. What is the fob transmitting to all the time? Is it to hold an O/C (open/circuit)
on a N/C (normally closed) circuit for the alarm or is it also transmitting to some thing else?  Also if the battery did go dead, will the fob lose the progaming, or is that only when you have a new fob? I've had no fob problems and I haven't given it much thought. I didn't know thy transmitted constent that supprised me.

Sorry guys but if you can't ask your bother CVOers who can ya ask

It does seem a little stupid, but thats the way it works. It is really transmitting to nothing until you get in range of your scoot.....and then presto! If you, like most people, put your extra one in a drawer at home.......they will both need a new battery within a week or so of each other. Look at it like sending out a pulse, uses battery even if is not received.

Leave your spare fob at home. If the one you carry dies on the road, just use your turn signals to enter the code to bypass.  Can't get any easier

OK!! now I've got the picture as to how thy work. Thy are also an ignition eliminator, the pulsing keeps the
  ignition active.

Now I've got a hole different respective of the fobs.

  Thanks guys for the enlightenment.

Doesn't make sense Pete but yep, that's basically how they work.  Although I do believe once it's deactivated, you can ride it without the fob until you turn the ignition off again?

Best to carry a spare battery.  I had to get in the habit of replacing them.  Best to replace them both at the same time...say at the first of the year or on your birthday each year.  GRC had a great idea on carrying the fob bypass information card with you in your wallet...it's where mine is with the code on it.

The first location that popped into my head was inside/behind the cow bell (horn).

Behind Cam (decal) cover plate is a small empty cavity perfect for small stash such as keys.... Money ,, whatever...I'm not sure if this cavity is available in newer CVO,s but defiantly on 2008 and under models.    :2vrolijk_21:
