POS SE air filter
« on: September 12, 2006, 10:05:42 AM »

While detailing the bike after my valve repair, I noticed my air filter didn't look so hot. It is the factory SE filter that came with the stage 1 kit.

This filter has about 8k miles on it.

Yes, those are holes in the filter media.

The filters with the blue trim were junk!, they changed them to a black trim but they are still pretty crappy!.

Buy a K&N and be done with it!

Not to 'de-rail' the thread but does your SE filter (red, blue black or whatever) fit snuggly against the backing plate when fully secured? I noticed mine does not sit completely flush and seal no matter how much I tighten the 3 screws. I am wondering if my "mounting posts" are too long. On mine, there is a bout a 1/8" gap at the bottom which I only noticed because oil was dripping out of my air cleaner. I took off the cover and noticed it was leaking at the bottom, behind the filter. Wasn't sure if the oil is blow by or an over exhuberantly oiled filter. Either way, that's when I noticed 'the gap'. I assume the filter should be snug all the way around to prevent dirt from going directly around the filter and into my engine.

Ah....those fine H-D tolerances...

Don't get too carried away snugging those 3. All three of mine cracked and eventually I lost the whole damn thing going down the turnpike.

Boatman,

That is the correct number (HD-0800); you can buy them from this place http://www.cyclespot.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HS-1011-0557

I can't believe H.D. is still selling those damn cheap filters blue or "new" black trim. K & N wouldn't lower their selling points to HD so HD went to a cheaper company to make more profit >:( and we pay for it in the long run.

That's a nice way to sandblast the internals of your motor! Thanks for caring HD!!

I ordered from K&N last night ($3.00 shipping).  Had an email this morning saying it was out of stock and would be shipped within 25 days.  Go figure.
