Luggage rack
« on: January 31, 2013, 12:24:55 PM »

Hi again

Can some one suggest a luggage rack for my bike?

i have a leather tour Pak, would that be a better option?  Has anyone put the tour Pak on their's?  Could you post a picture?

Thanks,

Maxine, if you have the funds, you may be better served to go with both the "trunk" tour pak and the luggage rack.  then you always have a place to put your belongings, whether bungy-strapped to the luggage rack, or secured inside the trunk.  Porky Pig (still riding again)

Thanks for the advise!  Only hesitating because of the extra weight of the tour Pak.  Doing a month long trip this summer and will need to pack smartly  but trying to keep it light.  Do you have one on your bike?  Could you post a picture.  Mine has the silver dots on it, matched my Heritage at one time.  Had it on the street glide as well.

Surely.  My pleasure.  I load mine down pretty good as the support rack is pretty beefy.

That looks great!  Do you have the extra passenger seat on with this?  and where do you carry that bag that is on the ground?

that bag on the ground rides sideways on top of the passenger pillion, right behind the rider (me).  Not the best picture but it all rides just behind me.  when I put a jacket in front of the bag, it acts as sort of a backrest.  like I said, I load it down pretty well when I go for a trip.  Pork.

Thanks again!  Could you move to the side just a bit?    Just kidding :-)

Would you happen to have the # for the tour pak rack?  Guy here says HD one not going to fit my bike, and obviously it does...

Side note, that month long trip is taking me right through your state!

Mrs. C, I will try my best to accomodate your request.  Sorry, you see my computer skills are just slightly less than some 1950s B movie special effects.  ha!  Guess you have to use your imagination as to what the seat and bag look like. But it does work well.  I am thinking you have a '12 convertible?  Here is the part number for the trunk mounting rack  54051-08 but you must also purchase a Docking Hardware Kit p/n 54245-10 so that you can extend the length on the removable saddlebag mounting brackets.  Otherwise, with the tour pak on, the saddlebag brackets won't stick out far enough to be able to mount the saddlebags.  And make sure you get those cotton-picking saddlebags mounted securely.........  Pork.    I do hope this helps you.  Now, when you want to take off the tour pack, just remove it with its quick-release.  And then purchase yourself a luggage rack (may I suggest p/n 53953-06 tapered sport luggage rack which will complement the rounded lines on your sissy bar.  Then you can switch back and forth from your luggage rack for quick trips, lunch pail, back pack, teddy bear, whathaveyou to your tour pack.  Good stuff, Maynard!

Hi again!
Went to the shop to order the parts today and they said they do not have # 54245-10 as a fitment for my bike?  I told them I had pictures :-)

Took your advice and ordered the rack as well.  28 days till spring!!

Mrs C,

In case it doesn't work out, we bought one of the Ultra Tour Pak's (Item 4148) from Kuryakan and while we use it more on the UltraClassic for additional storage, it is very light weight and would work well with the Convertible. I have a T Bag that I bought for my Deluxe 4-5 years ago, and I now use that on my Convertible. It attaches the sissy bar and sits on the back seat. And it unzips for expansion, is ultra light, and holds a lot of stuff. When we went to Sturgis I had no saddle bags so used it to hold my coat, chaps, rain gear, etc. Easy to take off and put back on, and so super light that I don't know it's there even when it has my laptop, coat, chaps, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks Sherry!
I am trying to get my bike all set up for a month long trip this summer to Bend, Oregon.  Going across Canada and down.  All recommendations greatly appreciated.
I already have the leather tour pak from another bike, but wasn't really keen on putting it on this one due to the weight of it.  But it is sooooo handy!  I also have a T-bag but changed to a lower profile bag that sits wonderfully on the passenger pilon.  It just won't be enough for what I will need for this trip.  I usually have my husbands bike to put my coat etc. in but he is not joining me on this trip so have to be self sufficient :-)
Because I already have the tour pak, going with Pork's suggestion and ordered both racks so can decide which one will be better for me.

Mrs. C, I don't believe you will be sorry at all.  I use both saddlebags and the tour pak trunk when I go to Sturgis...solo.....I am good for about a week. take my tent, sleeping bag, everything and have nothing sticking out of anything.  Oh, also I have that bag that goes behind me that I am now standing (to the side of).  When Mrs. Pork goes with me, however, there is no extra bag, trunk has to take a back seat, I have to tell her "sorry, dear, you can't take that.......oh???......my mistake, dear, I meant that I will leave my shoes, coat, gloves, overnite kit, toolbag, and extra gas at the house.......just need my toothbrush.........you can bring your computer, dress, 3 pair of shoes, large shopping bag...........weighing scales (???)...and several pair of pants and anything else that you can think of...................I just wasn't thinking............oh, that sound?????......that sound was the bike running out of gas waiting for you to get done packing............I know, I know, I should have bought 6 gallons instead of only 5...........No, dear, this bike doesn't need gas, it runs on love"........................ And now we are good for about 2 days.    Pork.
Seriously, Mrs. C, when you come thru the Tri-Cities (s.e. Washington state) you will have to give me a call and I and the mrs. will bbq something (unless you are a vegetarian in which case we have some other dynamite menus).  We'll treat you right so you can continue on down to Bend.    Summers here are to look forward to.   Pork.
