... Only thing that will take some time for me to adjust is the hydraulic clutch.  Seems to engage all the way at the end of it's travel.  My cable clutches engaged about mid way.  I'll need to practice before making tight u turns or parking lot maneuvers!!

perhaps you should consider the VPC clutch now offered by H-D besides AIM  ;)

Check with Ernie Erniezap. I believe he determined the wheel was the problem. :nixweiss:

It's not so much an engagement issue as it is where it engages.  There is no adjustment on the hydraulic clutch like the cable clutch.

It's not so much an engagement issue as it is where it engages.  There is no adjustment on the hydraulic clutch like the cable clutch.

There is no manual adjustment, but there can be a large difference in point of engagement as well as degree of release depending on how much air is in the hydraulic system.  If the clutch engages extremely close to the grip, I'd suggest doing a complete and thorough bleeding of the system.  This used to be a widespread problem when the bikes were built off-line, but I haven't heard much about it since the production was moved to the main assembly line.  Mine would drag when brand new and the engagement point was almost at the grip.  After two attempts at getting all the air out of the lines the engagement point was moved closer to an inch from the grip and I could actually feather it just like a cable clutch.  Been doing fine ever since.  If you didn't mean the clutch was engaging close to the grip but rather out at the other extreme I'd suggest contacting your dealer to get it checked out.

Jerry

btw, if I can safely assume you're talking about a 2013 model, you already have the Harley Assist & Slip Clutch (slipper clutch) so there shouldn't be any need to use a VPC unit.

It is the new 2013 slip clutch and it works just fine.  Really like the fact that the old "clunk" on putting it in gear is gone.  It will just take some getting used to for slow speed maneuvers that require slipping the clutch and holding back with the rear brake.  I'm old but can still adjust! :)

Had a bad tire on my 08 that created the same handling problem.  By looking at the tires, you couldn't tell that anything was wrong.  Dealer replaced both tires, problem cured.
Cowboy
Dealership replaced my rear tire(@10,000 miles), and after 5 miles down the road, I turned around and complained that the handling was "unstable".
The first thing I noticed was a dozen wheel weights on the rim(six on each side).
I said "There were only 2 weights on the rim when I rode in on the original tire, why would the new tire need 12 weights?".
I made the mechanic pull off every single weight, and re-balance the tire.
He was "unable" to get the tire to balance(with me standing there watching him), and said the rim was bad, and needed to be replaced.
I asked him to try another rear tire, and it balanced with 3 weights.
I wandered around the showroom, looking at wheel weights on the new bikes, and every single one of them had 6 or more weights on each rim.
Not a good feeling...

I would recommend calling HD Customer Service at 800-258-2464.  Not that they will do anything, but if enough of us call maybe something will happen.  At least this way you have it on record.

I had a discussion with a wrench from an independant shop and he suggested checking tire run out and running slightly lower (36 PSI) pressure in the front for awhile until the tires wear somewhat. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

Timely thread for me. I just picked up '08 FLHTCUSE3 in December and notice that it is a little squirrelly. At first I just thought it was a new/different handling bike from my '06 Ultra; and that I needed to get adjusted to the 110 vs 95 I had before. Back tire wants to break loose on turns - thought maybe I was being too heavy on throttle. Bike has what looks to be new ME880's front and rear. Someone suggested running tires up to 4 psi higher than stock - I'm assuming that is 40 psi front and 44 psi rear. I'm going to give that a shot and see if it helps. What order of troubleshooting would you suggest from there?

do not increase tire pressure...Harley's come with Dunlops not metzelers...if anything you should perhaps drop tire pressure a couple of pounds and try that

I traded in my 2010 FLHTC on the 2013 FLHTCUSE8, and my first impression is that it the SEU get's a little squirrelly when following larger vehicles. I notoriously ride closer to the cars in front of me than I should, so I get quite a bit of turbulence from the vehicles I'm following.

I didn't really notice it on my 2010, but it was really noticeable yesterday (which by the way was my first ride longer than my 1 mile January ride on it after buying it in mid December, 50 miles!) on the SEU. I also had a 17 MPH crosswind, which didn't help any.

When I got closer to pickup trucks with toppers, I could feel the buffeting and it felt like the entire front end was loose. As I backed off, the buffeting was reduced and it felt better (still had the crosswind to deal with).

The differences between the two bikes is something else that I may look at.

1. Windshield height. I had the tall windshield on the 2010. Could have something to do with the way the air hits the new shorter one that causes the buffeting to feel more severe. I'd expect the windshield with more surface area to exhibit that behavior, but it didn't. I have a short  Klock Werks windshield that I can put on, but I'll wait for the temps to get above 40.

2. Super Reach Seat. I replaced the stock heated hammock seat with a "super reach" seat, which moved me forward a couple of inches. It also dropped the seat height another two inches. The change in the Center of Gravity (CG), could also be a factor. I could check that easy enough by having my friend ride as a passenger, which would shift the CG back a bit. This solution is a stretch. I don't expect it to be the problem, but I am thinking out loud.

3. Weight. The weight of the SEU is about 100 - 150 pounds heavier than the 2010. I ride with a passenger quite often and don't consider the weight gain to affect it too much. However it depends on where that extra weight is. I could do a quick check by putting it on a floor jack and compare it's "balance" point to where the 2010 was.

Right off hand, those are the thoughts I'm coming up with. I need to mention that because I am vertically challenged, I had the dealer lower the front forks and the rear shocks before delivery. It could also be that the shortened springs up front have changed the handling (that's going to be a bit harder to check without the original springs).

My overall impression of the scoot so far is that it is a pretty good step up from the standard Ultra. The extra power is exactly what the Ultra needed. The creature comforts are nice, and I'll be able to comment on those when I get the chance to take a real road trip. I am very happy with the bike, and look forward to getting some more road time under my butt in the near future!

These are just my "out loud" thoughts on my impressions and opinions. We all know that opinions are like butt holes, "Everyone has one and yours is the only one that doesn't stink..."

Cheers!

yeah, but he just picked up a 5 year old bike.  no telling how many times that the tires have been changed since new.  and metzlers are known for needing to be run at a higher pressure than stock.
