Fuel Mileage ?
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:32:33 PM »

Seems like last year I averaged 38 to 40 mpg, mostly riding by myself, so far this early spring, riding with momma, approx a buck 40.I just filled and only getting 34, pretty much riding easy. I know when before, when I lost my mind and run it hard of course mileage would go down, sorry, I guess my question is, in your humble opinions would I lose between 6 and 8 miles per gallon with her on the back? like I said she weighs about a buck 40. Thanks all.

Maybe the fuel. In the winter months the oil companies change the blend. Not sure if they make any changes in your area or not but in the mid Atlantic region they do make a change and mileage does go down.

Short answer, no, the extra 140 lbs should not cut your mileage 6 to 8 mpg.  Having her sitting up in the wind might affect aerodynamics a bit, but a Harley isn't exactly aero to start with.  Kind of like running down the road holding a door in front of you, if you know what I mean.

Unless you're hammering the bike all the time, your 38-40 mpg solo doesn't sound very good either.  You may need to look at your tune.  Even with what passes for gasoline these days a late model 110 should run closer to 50 than 40 mpg on the highway.  Some tuners like to dump plenty of excess fuel into the engine all the time, even at cruise.

What do you consider a Good Fuel/Air Ration to be At Crusing Speeds?

I get 38-40 mpg with my SERK 103 and it is pretty much 13:1 across the board

With my 11 Limited, 103 with a stage 2.  I never got good mileage.  I actually ran 60 miles on a tank last year leaving Sturgis in the wind pulling a bike camper.

Just got back from an Orlando run 1,450 round trip. Averaged 41 running 70-78 all the way and a bit of city running in Orlando. No tune, stock

Your SERK is a different animal from the late model bikes with Cruise Drive that are the subject of this thread, and 40 mpg is decent mileage on our CVO103's (that's what I get consistently).  As for AFR's, are you sure yours is set up the same across all operating modes and speeds, or is that 13:1 just from the wide open throttle dyno run?  A WOT run isn't representative of what's going on at cruise.  I'd expect to see an AFR in the 14's under cruise conditions.  If you really have a tune that sets all operating modes at 13:1 your mileage would be much lower.

I just looked at my Dyno Sheet again. from 2,000 to 6,200 the AFR is a flat 13.1. No signs of anything above that 13.1 on the entire RPM Range.
I am thinking of a few mods, Maybe Time to find a New Dyno Tuner

Hmmm, Thanks Jerry, best we ever did was going out to thre grand canyon and with a great tail wind I got close to 50, but all other times from day 1 was about 40. I hjad th SE race tuner put in before I took it home from the dealer but was full of decel pop and they could'nt adjust so I went to the PC 5, that took care of the decel pop but like I said pretty much 40 mpg is the best I ever got except of course when I get on it. Now the hard part is to find a tuner up here in Eastern Washington, I don't trust the dealers around here. Thanks all. :(

Unmodified and riding two-up all the time (I am 6'4" 260 and wife is 5'8" 140) our mileage has always been 41-42 no matter what grade of gas, no matter what time of year, no matter whether it was running around town or fully loaded for a weekend trip.

I weigh 220. Bike has S&S V111 with Super E carb. I weigh 220. I get about 48 MPH running two lane hilly two lane roads running 65- 75 MPH. Heck we don't really build up the motors for gas mileage do we?

I was getting about 30 with my old engine build.  It'll be interesting to see what the fuel mileage does on the new build.

Stock, my 2011 CVO Street Glide hardly ever got over 40 MPG. After adding pipes and tuner I average around 38 MPG running around back roads and when I get out on the interstate running 75-80 MPH Loaded 2Up I get around 35 MPH.

Now let's be clear here. I don't ride like a Grandpa. I have a couple of friends I ride with who can run through all the gears before I shift into 4th. One is a five speed and the other is six speed. When I ride with them I get around 42mpg.

Basically, if I run it like a little girl then I get great gas mileage. It's no different than how some people drive their cars.
