EZ-Pass / Suggestion: Where to hide it
« on: April 07, 2013, 09:58:54 AM »

Does anyone know if the EZPass pod works through the batwing?   If I were to mount my EZPass to the backside of the batwing, would it work in the toll machine?   Look at it this way, It's the same theory of it being mounted to your windshield, right? And the windshield is mils thicker than the batwing... only thing is that you can't hand the officer the pass when he needs it.  I just hate the look of the dam thing and even worse, carrying it..

Had an EZ pass in every bike for the last 8 years, never had a problem. If you want to show proof during a traffic stop, keep an old ez pass bill, or registered vehicle list.

Yes it will - but - it will not work at the crappy toll readers on the small bridges going into PA.

Even if it doesn't read through the faring for some reason, 99% of the systems just pickup your plate and charge the correct toll. There are many times on the parkway or turnpike in Jersey that I have not had the ezpass and had no issues.

Just an FYI, in the fairing is a pain in the butt if for some reason you need to take it out.
LtBawb on this site and 3 friends trailerd their bikes (one open trailer) to Myrtle Beach several years ago. Paid tolls for 5 vehicles all the way down and back.

I had forgotten to remove mine when we went camping in Hatteras several years ago.
In my 5th wheel toy hauler, with 5 layers of aluminun foil and my heavy FXRG jacket over the fairing, and the reader still picked up the ezpass

I now keep the ez pass in the left saddlebag, velcro'd to the front panel near the top of the bag. "EZ" to remove when necessary.

One area to be aware of is any "EZPass only" lane with a gate and no attendant - if your transponder is not reading or you don't have it - your not getting through.

If you think you need to have the ability to "hand it to the officer", then just get one of the simple holders with small suction cups on the ends and mount it to the inside of the windshield down low.  Or if you have one of those windshield pocket accessories just throw it in one of the pockets.  In my case if I plan to ride the bike on a toll road I just take the transponder out of the wife's car and stick it to the windshield with the suction cup holder.  We only have one transponder but I have three vehicles listed to use the same one.  As previously noted, if the transponder doesn't read for some reason, or you forget to install it, the toll system around here uses photo's of your license plate to charge your account.  I've always assumed that is the case for all of the open road tolling systems, perhaps I'm mistaken?

I'm like porthole, not quite understanding why you would need to hand it to a LEO.  Maybe that's a NY thing, but I've never heard of it elsewhere.

Thanks guys for all the great suggestions, I think I'm mounting it to the bottom side of my left saddle bag lid.  Good idea if I need to get to it fast..  To answer Porthole and GRC question.  You would need to give it to a MTA Officer at the toll gate (in case the gate doesn't open) so he can read the barcode on the transponder to manually open the toll gate for you.
Thanks again, Rosco

I have mine velcroed to the inner front of my right saddlebag lid.  It usually works fine, but I've had about 3 times now in PA where it didn't work.

My Sunpass (same as ez-pass?) is and has been in the rt fairing lower compartment for 7 years. Only take it out to change batteries, when I think about it or the state sends me a battery warning letter. I have the compartment fillers/liners, whatever you want to call them in there as well and it works great.

in PA where it didn't work.

The only place mine has ever been an issue was at the smaller PA tolls that are gated. An at each one the EZPass only, gated lane had an attendant  :nixweiss:

I had a short conversation with one gate keeper with him telling me it was my EZpass - my batteries, my problem etc. I asked him why he was stationed in an un-manned lane then?

I assume that was only a part time job and his real job was a service writer or manager at a Harley dealership.

In Calif. we have "FasTrack" for all the bridges and some freeways in So Cal.

While I only have two transponders, I've had as many as 7 vehicles/trailers on my list at one time.  On our bikes we never carried the transponders.  When the camera would take our picture, they automatically (I'm sure it's computerized) scan all the tags on FasTrack list and see that we were valid...deduct the fee and that's it.  The same still applies with my 5th wheel.

Not much in the way of toll roads in Colorado except around Denver (E470 and a fast lane thru Denver).  I have a small strip of 'tape' that goes on the headlight for the bike that works very well.
