Great job Ken.  I know what it takes to finish wood like that and it is a labor of love for sure, but well worth it

Beautiful Ken  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:,  didn't know you were into wood working.

Yeah I am, Duane... especially during the cold winter months when it's too cold to ride. I've gone in spurts, just doing it when I have a desire and need to build something. Do you do woodworking?

Over the years I've built several pieces of freestanding furniture, plus several built-in units. I really enjoy it... as much as riding, actually. I don't have a great deal of equipment... my nice Powermatic 64B tablesaw, a couple of routers... an old 1/4" Ryobi and a nice Makita 1/2" plunge/fixed base I bought to do all the routing for this bar and cabinet, circular saws, a handheld jigsaw, handheld sander, etc... plus a nice scroll saw and a small bandsaw that was given to me by a good friend. Oh yeah, and some older equipment that was given to me by another friend... an old but serviceable Central Machinery 4" jointer, an old Dewalt 13" thickness planer that I have not yet gotten working again, and a nice old lathe that I want to get set up to learn to do some turning with. Turning is really the ultimate in the woodworking arts, but I've never ventured into it.

Yeah it is, Pete. It's a TON of work to get a finish rubbed out and looking good... But I do love the results. As I mentioned earlier, that's the beauty of lacquer... You can't rub out poly, or even varnish, like you can lacquer and shellac. I put down two coats of shellac as a sealer and to bring out the depth of the beautiful cherry grain and the color, and then two coats of brushing lacquer over that, to build up enough film depth to take the hand rubbing. Plus, shellac is dissolved by alcohol... not a very good topcoat for a BAR!  :o No such issues with lacquer... the only thing that dissolves it is lacquer thinner, and there will be none of that stuff anywhere near this bar!

I'm a dabbler, Nothing too fancy and certainly nothing like what you have done there.

I still don't have  a few things that would make life a lot easier, joiner and planer for starters. I get by using a router table for joining but the large surface area stuff is tough. And finished wood around here is way too expensive.

Don't know how it is down by you, but up here the wood for a project like your bar would probably cost 5-10 times what it would cost for a finished store bought item.

Yeah Duane... Milled wood is NOT cheap! That's why I want to get a bigger jointer and get the thickness planer working... so I can buy rough lumber and mill it myself.

There is a really cool lumberyard near me in Suwannee - a REAL lumberyard - and they have great prices. I bought some common cherry there for $1.89 a board foot, and they had 16 foot long select cherry there too, in widths up to over 10", for only $3 a board foot. That's really cheap for nice cherry. I bought one of those wide 16-footers and made the drawer fronts from a single piece of it, so the grain continues all the way across all 3 drawers. A little touch that almost no one will ever notice, but me!

You're right though... when I add up everything I spent on this bar for wood, fasteners, finishing materials, mirrors, consumables like sandpaper, steel wool, etc... I probably could have gotten a finished one for the same or less money... but then it would just be a purchased bar, and not the unique piece it is. Kind of a source of pride for me to have built it just the way I wanted it.

Now my wife wants me to build an even bigger wall unit for our master bedroom, with a big opening for the TV! It never ends...  8)

I prefer the term "Temporary Spiritual Oversight", Howard!

We are riding the Cherohala Skyway tomorrow with my friend Johnny, and he's going to stay overnight tomorrow night to officially christen the Badger Bar with the first real drinks served... which of COURSE be only Jack Daniels, on the rocks or neat... no mixers allowed for the first round!

We plan to give the shuffleboard table, dart board, and the now-once-again-operational hot tub a workout, too!

OK... One last post and then I'll let this thread go to the Dead Thread Shed...

Just wanted to post pics of the vintage TGI Fridays brass foot rails that the redoubtable Mr. Wizard salvaged more than a decade ago from a closing store at the Prado in Atlanta and subsequently stored in his garage, half-forgotten - until he remembered them and graciously donated them to me for the Badger Bar. Wiz is a self-professed corner leaner... so that right corner is reserved for his exclusive use whenever he is in residence.

I didn't really design the BB to accommodate foot rails, but they mounted up pretty well after some non-trivial elbow grease with the Brasso!

The really cool thing about these rails is their connection to my younger days. I trained here in Atlanta with IBM in '80-'81 as a handsome young stud  8), and there is a very good chance that my cowboy-booted feet (Urban Cowboy was all the rage way back then...) may have rested on one or more of these very rails during our numerous and well-oiled nightly outings after classes... as we frequented many a nightspot along the Perimeter, rather consistently blowing our $15/day per diem allowances on adult beverages in lieu of food during those three 5-week-long training stints. But we were young and bulletproof back then!

Cheers!

Ken
