New Compensator & Hayden Chain tensioner
« on: May 01, 2013, 09:20:50 PM »

I just finished installing a new SE compensator and a Hayden M6BT07 primary chain tensioner. What a difference!!!! On my test ride the scooter shifted so smooth I could not tell it went into gear, no more bang when you put it in first gear down shifts very smooth. My stock chain tensioner was not keeping the chain tight when I removed the primary chain cover I thought the chain would be very tight and it had 3/4 inch of slack in it. I do not know which made the biggest difference the compensator or the chain tensioner, but together I am very happy!!! The bike is a 2009 seuc.

The Hayden is great... SO much better than the P.O.S. ratcheting stock tensioner.

I just did the same change. I'm with you. Couldn't believe the disappearing 1st gear "bang" and how easy it is to find Neutral.

How about all the other gear changes both up and down, is the clang bang gone on them? I have a new fltrse2 that is an absolute joke how clunky it is. Of course HD says it is NORMAL. My primary chain is Banjo string tight when stone cold and the MOCO does'nt seem to be concerned. I want to install a Hayden or manual adjuster to forgo future damage in the future but HD says it will void my warranty!

After the repairs were completed and I went out for my test ride the bike shifted so smooth I did not think that it was in gear yet, the same way down shifting. I wish I would have made the repairs before I did.

It might void the warranty on the primary, not the whole bike

I have a question separately about the SE compensator and the Hayden tensioner.

** Does the tensioner eliminate the on the throttle and off the throttle slop? You know that annoying disconnected feeling.

** Will the prevent the compensator from failing?

Very interested in this. I had my compensator replaced and for about a month I no longer had that annoying sloppy disconnected feeling.

No, the tensioner won't make the poor design and poor quality compensator any better.  The wear issues for that part aren't a result of the stock tensioner issue.

As for the lost motion when quickly changing throttle settings, unless your stock tensioner wasn't working and you had a ton of chain slack, I'd say no it won't change that either.  Much of the "slop" you feel in lower gears when quickly chopping the throttle is due to the lost motion in the actual gearbox shift dogs.  Lower gears have more "slop" due to the larger speed differences between the gears (larger ratio change from 1st to 2nd than between 5th and 6th for instance).

Jerry,

Thanks for the response. I read a lot about RedShift or Redline for the tranny and primary. Do you have any experience with this and does it work any better than any other "good" lubricant?

I've been running Redline Shockproof Heavy in my Harley transmission's since about 2002.  It's an excellent gear lube, but like so many things these days that get picked up on internet forums it's probably not as great as the hype has made it out to be.  There are plenty of other choices that are just as good.  The main thing IMHO is to get the motor oil out of the gearbox and use a real gear lube (75w90).  If Redline is hard to find, try Spectro or BelRay or Amsoil Gear or whatever.

The primary is less critical and you can go with a lot of alternatives as long as what you use is fully compatible with a wet clutch.

Thanks for the feedback. Our M6BT07 does exactly what it's advertised to do and as one satisfied customer said 'Never has such a small amount of money spent made such an amazing amount of difference.'

I just put a new comp in my 09 on tuesday.  No other changes.  I can give the same feed back of the world of difference it made.  I got almost 400 miles on it.  Who's to say if it will go back to the same clunkness, loud, clattering, red gauled up POS like the one I took out after 4000 miles.
