Harley Cooling Fan for 110
« on: May 05, 2013, 10:31:38 AM »

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere and I did a search but haven't found the answer as yet, so figured I'd ask the question again.
I'm looking at getting The Harley Fan Kit #91196-08 for my 2013 FLHTCUSE8. Yes its running hot and not real well, after jackpot headers, PCV, and a Dyno. I know the root of the problem won't be solved byt the fan entirely but thought for the short term it couldn't hurt if i'm doing some parades etc. So; to move on...

I'M Looking in the parts catalog it says (if I read it correctly) it won't fit models with the 110 Engine.
Has anyone installed this on a newer 110? Why wont it fit? Can't really see any difference except maybe the AC mounting.. Any help, thoughts suggestions?
Thanks

I can't help directly with your question but have you looked at this fan option? http://www.wardspartswerks.com/cooling-fans.html
I don't have them on my bike but I've heard and read a lot of good things about it.

A lot of us run the Wards Parts Works cooling fans. They are very well made, and the fans blow air right on the hottest part of the cylinder heads - not just between the cylinders like most other fans do. They come in black, chrome, or CVO Granite. They also can have a thermostatic switch that will turn them on and off as needed automatically

There are multiple threads about the Wards fans on here... Do a search for "wards parts works" or "wards fans" and you will find them.

i have the hd fan on my 96" with a tle & it does the job. probably not as perfect as others might but it does work and it is reliable.

i have no idea why it might not fit a 110.

Try reading the online catalog again.  It says it fits '07 and up (except Trike) and bikes with 110 engines, then goes on to list CVO's in the list of bikes it will fit.  There is nothing about the 110 that would make the fan not fit.

The fans, either MoCo or Wards, will not make much of a change to your temps on the road.  They will help with the spikes that happen in traffic and with stop and go.  They will also help a lot with hot restarts if you run them for a little while after shutdown.  If you want to pull 20 degrees off your road temps, switch to a 160f thermostat.  Wards sells them and it takes about 10 min to swap it out.

I just this week put a set of Wards fans and the tstat on my 103.  Fans first, tstat after some runs with just the fans.  The tstat had the largest impact.  But the fans alone did keep it out of temp management when I was in the stop and go.  Fans have little to no impact out on the road, temps 200-220 on a day in the 70's.  After the tstat the oil temps were in the 180 range.  70f day with the lowers on.

I think that an oil cooler will give you more cooling for The engine then some fans on the cylinders

I do not agree with the post above regarding the Wards fans helping at speed, or on the road. I think they do as they will kick on and off even at speed (thermo-switch) which to me indicates that some temp change is a result. Ambient temp remains the same and my speed remains the same so if not the fans kicking on when temp reaches the switch pre-set and then kicking back off when the pre-set is reached on the low side... what causes this if not the fan? Ward himself says they help until 80mph at which point for safety prevented further testing.
I have the fans, thermostat, thermoswitch, Fullsac inserts and dyno tune, but even so the pipes are the culprit, they are HOT and a few inches from your leg.

You could be correct.  There may be some change to the head temps.  But based on oil temps, they had no effect on my scooter.  This was at speeds of 35 to 65 mph, with temps in the 70f range.

Thanks  GRC; I missed that part, after re-reading, I got it..!
After doing a little research I'm considering the Wards fan kit. I was looking for a comparison of the 2 but haven't found it yet

they are not supposed to affect oil temp.  the fans do not do anything to cool your oil, they do however cool your cylinder heads.  and apparently, they do a pretty good job of it.

selling it cause I didn't use them yet. I seem to buy a lot of stuff that I don't use. I bought a rack to store a tour pack on from a forum member on another site. I ended up donating it to a raffle. People seem to like the fans pretty well and I probably will wish I had them on during the first traffic jam I come upon or parade i ride in, But I do have a jag fan assist oil cooler getting mounted shortly. I bought a HD adjustable backrest I used once and took off. I have a Harley hammock seat I used for about 200 miles and took off and stored.

My new policy is if I'm not using it and my dad doesn't want it for his bike I'm selling it. He tells me I can probably hold my own swap meet lol.

Well I just ordered a set from Jason; I'll let you know after I receive them. They looked better than the Harley Fan but I still don't have any data on one vs the other..I think I will probably add a fan to the oil cooler as well to try and keep things as cool as possible.

At the moment it seems that I need to get anther Dyno as she's running poorly especially on the low end, and yes hot, and smells rich on deceleration and when you pull into the garage. So I have some work to do, not sure if changing to another slip on would help, or where it will go from here. I'm a bit disappointed at the performance of the 110 vs my 103.. oh I should clarify... currently 2013 110, with Jackpot ceramic coated headers, stock SE highflow AC and stock mufflers and PCV. Previous bike, 103 with Jackpot ceramic headers (the same ones) S&S quiet tour 3.5 Slip ons and SE 255 cams and PCV...It seems to me that my throttle response and the whole power band was stronger and more even that the 110. Now I just have to figure out why..I would have thought that getting rid of the cat and the first dyno would have given the 110 better kick.

I know its a little of subject but it all has to do with cool...also..!

You do realize that oil temp is directly related to head temps.  The MoCo has been using oil to cool the heads and pistons since the twin cam came out.  In recent years they have increased the reliance on the effect of oil cooling.  This is why the oil coolers come standard now.  I can read head temps too, but they are all over the place.  Pull a hill, they go up, coast down the other side they go down.  Pull the clutch and just roll, they go down more.  It's much easier to decrease the head temps.  The oil temps on the other hand are fairly stable.  It takes them a while to go up, and a longer while to go down.

As to how well the fans work, I have no complaint.  Without them the scooter was in temp management way to often, even in cool weather.  Now with the fans, temp remain fairly constant sitting in traffic.  I'll have a better feel for them later in the summer after the temps get into the mid 90's.  Last year this scooter was just miserable to ride when the temps got into the hi 90's.  It would go into Temp management and just sit there shaking and pinging.  On hot days I'd feel the need to cut it off at stop lights.  It was that bad, MoCo said it was normal.
