My dealer tried to charge $4k over MSRP when he thought he had me emotionally attached to the bike. I thanked him for his time and walked away, with him right on my heels. Of course they can try to overcharge, can't blame them, it's additional profit and some people will pay it. I rarely pay list price for anything as a general rule, especially for a vehicle. Wound up paying list price on the new bike but that price included a Freedom windscreen and first service. Got 20% off ESP and the Daymakers as part of the deal too. Had to win somewhere or I would have kept walking.

:D  Tinspinner, I admire your discipline.  I never learned to haggle properly, so I don't do it well.  Maybe there's a course I can enroll in...

Normally, I will take months of searching to find a good deal on a big purchase, and I HATE feeling as if I'd been taken advantage of.  But in certain cases, as in my bike, I knew it was what I wanted, and knew it would be marked up.  In that case, I just fought as long as I dared to bring the price down, then paid the extra $1000.  And I can live with that.

Everyone should do their homework before walking into any motorcycle or car dealer to buy a vehicle. Harley's website lists the MSRP and freight. Any additional charges are add-ons to boost dealer profit. You should know what you will pay for the vehicle before you even enter the dealership. Find a dealer that has the bike you want and tell them you will pay X amount (your $$$ figure) for the vehicle today. If they balk, or give you a song and dance about how much they are losing if they sell it at that price, just say thank you, get up and leave. I had two dealers quote me $5K over list on my CVO, so I left. The third dealer gave me the bike under MSRP and gave a grand more on my trade. The funny part is that they had to get the bike from the first dealer I visited. Just be prepared to walk out the door, but be realistic about your offer also.

I shopped around.
Got...
$1000 more on my trade than one dealer (2 were matching the same price), and $1000 less than MSRP on my ULTRA CVO.

And?  I could have saved about $500 more from one dealer who wanted me to wait a month and a half, or saved almost $1000 more if I drove 100 miles away.

I decided to stay local, and buy from my HOG sponsoring dealership.  Not the most pleasant experience, as they wouldn't throw anything else in, like 1st service, and I will probably NEVER buy from them again as a result of the complaining about other dealers lowballing and ruining the business, but I didn't want to wait, and didn't want to drive,
and I got my bike.

No reason to ever pay more than MSRP.  EVER!

In this economy, I had no idea that anybody was paying over MSRP for anything??

Personally, I would never pay over MSRP for any new vehicle. (I waited for almost a year to purchase the '06 Zo6 when people were paying $5k - $20k over just to "be one of the lucky few" when I found one at a small dealer about 100 miles away and called on it, the owner was saying "make me an offer", the conversation ended with me saying 'MSRP'. 45 mins later the GM calls me an tells me that "We would be happy to sell you at MSRP")

'Had a good friend of mine that made a lot of $$ "flipping" Harleys back in the day, (mid 90s to the early 00s) before the MoCo ramped up their production to meet demand at the time.

My Dealer, Heritage HD in Ft. Walton, never charged more than MSRP (even back in the day), just here's what / when we have coming in, if you want it, put down a small deposit and we'll call you.

One thing I figured out in life; the more you are in a hurry the more it's going to cost and vise versa.

If paying over MSRP works for you, than good on 'ya, it just doesn't fit my business scenario

You gotta shop around, know how to haggle, and be willing to walk away. I own my own business. I deal with business owners every day. When my dealer said 4K over msrp for my 13 ultra cvo I walked away and have never been back. Ended up getting mine at msrp and no set up fee with a $500 store credit. I also got my 1K and 5K service for free, 20% off all genuine HD parts and accessories and 10% off non-HD

Some people just don't want to do that work or they gotta have it now

A month later the sales manager from my old dealership called me to say he would do msrp plus set up fee. All he heard was a click. And I laughed all the way to the bank

Just got back from the Dealership here in Stuttgart, Germany.  They have a SEUC Ann for 39000 Euro or about 51000 USD.  So paying a couple bucks over MSRP in the states does not seem that bad.  No idea how much fudge room they have built in to the price but I know it is 14000 over what I paid.

You won't get a dealer in Canada going under MSRP. They are all controlled by Dealey Canada and he doesn't give the dealers the option. I also don't think they go over MSRP either as I have never heard of that happening. Same goes for the ESP - you pay MSRP on it as well. The most you can hope for here in Canada is an in-store credit. As of January the dealers are now required to charge a manufacturers handling fee of $119.00. There is no negotiating - period, end of story. If you want the bike then you pay MSRP plus all setup fees, handling fees etc.

I paid MSRP for my 2012 FLHXSE3. I refused to pay more than MSRP I called 13 dealerships in 4 states till i found one that actually had a FLHXSE3 in the pipeline and would sell it to me at MSRP. I had to drive a ways to pick it up but I assure you I saved money and a LOT of money. There are dealerships out there that want to sell as many bikes as they can and then there are dealerships still stuck in the days when you had to wait a year for ANY Harley you wanted those days are GONE. Sadly some of us will still pay the premium for a CVO. It's not necessary call around find a good dealer and bypass the others. They will get the message. My dealership had one CVO in the building sold, one that was in transit that was sold, Mine which was being built and to be shipped that was sold (to me) and a waiting list for still more CVO's.

Here in Texas there are several dealers that never charge over MSRP ever for CVOs. The problem is also waiting for what you want and getting in line.  The last two bikes I have bought out of state at MSRP for what I wanted and just worked in half of shipping.  I would rather pay $500 for shipping than $1000 + over MSRP.

I just paid $1400 over for my FLHTCUSE8 Annv but, they gave me $1775 more for my trade in.  So over all I guess I did ok, it still stinks though.
