SEEG Rear Suspension Upgrade
« on: May 23, 2013, 09:00:03 AM »

:orange:  Had what I call the basic Ohlin rear shocks installed on my SEEG at the Ohlin tent during 2013 Daytona Bike Week.  Really a nice experience.  Custom built, custom fitted.  Ran the Dragon's Tail recently and the bike was so much more stable than before.  And it handles the suspension shocks at highway speeds so much better.  Anyone have similar experiences with suspension upgrades?

Brian's one of the main reasons I'm making the changes that I am. Talked to Dan at Traxxion Monday, hope to have my Bitubo's next week. :2vrolijk_21:

I think you'll be mightily impressed, Joe!  But then, you will quickly realize just how crappy the front end is!  Better call Dan back now and make an appointment for the AK-20s! :)

Now wait a minute, didn't I read somewhere that you put the H-D premium ride fork kit in your bike?

I did and it's better than stock, but I still think that eventually, I'm going to need to make my own visit to Traxxion and get them yanked out of there.  On a scale of 1-10, stock being a "1" and AK-20s being a "10," the H-D premium cartridges are no better than a "6," IMO.  Only reason I even tried them was I got free install labor, so it was only the $300, or whatever, for the parts.  Made a big difference, but I still feel a harshness on the front that wasn't there with the AK-20 cartridges I had on my '04 SEEG and isn't there on the back end with the Bitubos.

I HATED the stock front suspension so I went with the H-D fork kit and it's a huge improvement IMHO but I don't have the AK-20 experience to compare with. I may upgrade down the road to the AK's but it'll be a while. I've got my money earmarked for other upgrades first and I'm pretty happy with the Premium fork kit right now. I ordered the Bitubo's a couple of weeks ago but they were on back order, like I said I talked to Dan and he said he expected them early next week and would ship them to me as soon as they arrive.

Yep... Upgraded to Progressive Monotubes, and Progressive 940's on the back and bike handles better than it ever had.

The conversation went a little sideways didn't it? Sorry about that.

There are a lot of good threads on here about suspension upgrades. I can't remember anybody saying they were happy with the stock stuff. I've not got to change my rear shocks yet but I can't wait. I'm expecting to experience the same thing you did.

I've been very happy with the stock suspension on the '05 SEEG, the rear shocks sacked out at about 47k and I put the air shocks from the '09 SERG on, and really like the setup. (the '05 had the firm ride that I prefer coming out of the gate, as it was lowered on both ends w/ a "sport tune" from the factory)

'Put the HD cartridge forks and premium ride shocks on the '09 SERG. 'Did the shocks first and they were a definite improvement, haven't had a chance to try out the forks yet. To me, the '09 really needed help on both ends. Possibly due to the first year of the new frame / tires.

The ride on the '01 FXDWG2 is fine to me, with the stock HD/FOX shocks.

I'd recommend getting the 330mm version of the Bitubo's.  I have the shorties.  Been messing with them for over a year.  They seem a bit stiffer than I expected.  I'm still doing all the voodoo adjustments to try to find the magic spot.  No joy yet.

Have to concur with Jeff.  Have ridden bikes with the 300mm Bitubos and have the 330mm on both of mine.  Noticeably better ride with the 330s when they're even close to dialed in.  It's also much easier and quicker to dial in the 330s to an acceptable sweet spot than it was the 300s (at least in my experience).
