Is the miles to empty "r" accurate ?
« on: May 26, 2013, 12:21:23 AM »

Seems like mine is off.  It can show 80 mies to empty and when i fill up, I only can take 3 to 3.5 gallons,  and that's on a 6 gallon tank. Usually after a pretty high speed long ride.   Doing mostly  80- 90 mph.   I think I'm running a bit rich in that area.  About 2800-3000 rpm. Any ideas ?   Thanks.  Stuart.    :nixweiss:

I think the mpg goes up or down based on the speed you travel. Slow down and it will rise. It kind of estimates it for you based on your traveling condition.

FYI mine does the same thing. I go by the odometer. No more than 190-200 miles till I'm out

Mine seems to be very accurate, and of course I'm always pushing my luck! :bomb2:

Mine's off that same way, Stu. I have ridden until it says almost no range left, but I could still only put 5 gallons in. I guess no range means a gallon left. They probably do this so people don't run their expensive bikes out of gas!

When I fill up, my range usually says between 220 and 240.

Mine usually says 170 when I fill up after burning a tank after I am cruising at about 85 mph.  Could it be that it's giving me numbers like that cause I am going at that speed?   I know if I run locally and lower speeds, it's will go up.   Can these readers be adjusted? Or reset?

My 13 CVO king is more accurate than my 12 CVO road glide.

My King with the built motor gets better MPG than the road glide.

On a trip 225 is as far as I have dared to run the Glide and it took 5.4 gallons about 41.6 mpg.  This is running 75 mph by GPS.  I have gone 242 miles on the King averaging the same speed and put in 5.5gallons about 44 mpg.  I routinely on the hwy get better mpg out of Da King.  Running mountain two lane, I use more of the extra power and the MPG on Da king is worse.

When Da King has 10 miles showing, it takes about 5.8 gallons

Mine seems very accurate. I have noticed is does adjust as I ride meaning that it may say 30 miles to empty and then 5 miles later says 20 miles to empty, so there is adjustments always going on depending on riding conditions. Then again you can always calculate your overall miles on a full tank and go by that to gauge your mpg's and see if something is awry there

Really depends on how you fill your tank.  Do you stick the gas nozzle and fill till the pump shuts off?  If so the tank is not full.  The 6gal tanks are a pain to completely fill as compared to the 5gal tanks.

My 06 CVO 5 gal tank holds 5.4 gal if I completely drain it and fill it.
My 09 Ultra 6 gal tank hold 5.7 gal if I completely drain it and fill it.

I always top the tank off the same way, leaning on the side stand until the gas level is right in the filler neck.  I find that the miles to empty is reasonably accurate if I use that method.  The difference between letting the pump shut off vt topping off can be as much as 3/4 of a gallon depending on the pump.

Yes and no.  It is not accurate enough to let you run the tank down to the last oz based on the mileage it shows to begin with.  If it comes on and says you have 35 miles left, you probably do.  But it will not count down evenly.  When it says you have 10 miles left, it will say 5 left withing the next mile or so.  As you approach the lower end, it will basically drop off a cliff.  I turned mine to that display and ran it out, just to see how accurate the gauge was.  I got 268 miles for the tank and the range indicated seemed to count down correctly at first.  But the lower the range got, the more squirmy it got.  And the last 5 miles of indicated range were not accurate at all.  The scooter went farther than what was indicated, but the indication counted down way fast at the end.

On trips I tend to use the butt gauge for fuel.  About three hours and my butt says it's time to get fuel.

You really do need to check what the range really is if you intend to push the limits.  I had an 11 Fatboy that was bone dry just as the gauge neared empty.

Mine is the same. Speed has a lot to do with it. If I get 40+ mpg  i would have fallen a sleep on that ride. try riding at 60 and your mileage will go up dramatically. But you will probably fall asleep so be careful

I find it changes depending the terrain and the speed. Have you ever noticed that the r value increases when you are riding down a loooong incline. On the other hand when you are ascending the r value seems to go down much more quickly. I think it should be used only a rough indicator of remaining mileage.
