Just got my bike back from the 5k service and hit road with a bunch of friends for a beautiful fall ride in the Kettle Moraine Valley of Wisconsin. Everything was going smooth and we were enjoying a great 75 deg. day. Then we came to a stop and out of no where I hear the dreaded bottom end knock, I just freaked, not believing what my ears were hearing, I motioned my group to pull over and we pulled into one of the state rec. areas to investigate the situation. We all stood around listening to the motor and I got as many opinions as we had assholes. We Brainstormed everything from bad fuel, over filled oil, bad spark plug or ignition misfire, and one guy even suggested that someone could have messed with the timing during my 5k service. I immediately bypassed all the simple, easy-to-fix inexpensive problems and convinced myself that I had a wrecked motor. I did the slow burn all the way home wondering how the hell this could have happened to my bike, but the long and short of it is that in most cases, the culprit is something else entirely, as I found out.
Brought the bike back the dealer and told him the problem. they checked the plugs, and breather and even took out about a 1/2 quart of oil that was over the full mark, but didn't hear the noise I was hearing and gave me the bike back and sent me on my way. Well, I took the bike down the road for a test drive and the first stop light I hit, boom there was the knock again. turned around and went right back to the shop. pulled up and the service tech was standing right there having a smoke. I called him over and said listen to the motor, he leaned over took an earful looked up and said sounds like you got a loose compensator nut, hell its under warrantee relax, go have a beer in the diner and I'll call you when it done, he tells me. He called it on the money, the bottom end knock was due to a loose compensator nut. So, when this assembly malfunctioned, the accompanying noise transfers along the sprocket shaft into the bottom end, leading the me to think the worst and therefore causing the insidious knock. lesson I learned this week, Check the simple and inexpensive things first and don't over react and jump to conclusions.
