The Thunder Slide kit for the stock carb is where you should start if your bike doesn't already have one installed, it will work well(with proper jetting) with the 88" or 95". The TSlide used to be sold in the HD SE catalogue.

The 95" w/cams = lot of bang/$$

Pipe looks as though it could be a Supertrapp.
Boring to 98", along with one of several cams, and mild head work that will establish your wants, will be the largest gain, per dollar spent. :)

Are there any negative side effects from going to 98? I also have an 88 I'd like to hop up a little, what happens to fuel consumption, reliability, and starting?

I'm kind of looking for DIY shadetree mech stuff I can do for now.  I was under the impression going to 95 wouldn't require any boring, just bolt on the cans and cylinders...

That's correct.  Harley will offer cylinders that allow you go to 95 cubic inches as just a bolt on.  Axtell and Revolution Performance (perhaps others too but those I know now) offer more robust cylinders that go to a slightly larger displacement.  With them you can go to 98 inches3, also without any boring.  Just a straightforward bolt on task.

Not to hijack your thread here, guess it does actually just extend the original question, but an 88 to 95/98 build is one I've not done for a long time.  So what is the current state of the art on such things?

Lots of new cam options on the street in the several years since these were common upgrades done to 88s.  Has the market left these by or are there even better build options on the street for the old 88" upgrade jobs?

even with 95",you can save alot by having your cylinders bored instead of buying the SE cylinders (the SE cylinders are just bored @ the factory 88" or 96" cylinders & not matched to any piston kit),our (and any decent shop`s)95" or 98" kits are bored & honed to the EXACT piston kit sent with the cylinders

the local hd shop used to bore your cyl to 95" for about 75% of what the bolt on kit cost - these days all they do is offer the bolt on kit, no in shop machining any more.

to summarize you save TIME by buying bolt on cylinders - you save money and arguably get a better product ordering proper pistons and having your cylinders bored.

another money saver is to put your pistons in the cylinders using a normal ring compressor - leaving the bottom of the piston sticking out the bottom of the cyl - then with a second set of skilled hands lower the assy down, install the wrist pin and then push the cyl down on the block. saves the special ring compressor.

with 88" bikes the bigger issue is cam bearings and chain tensioners - spend your bux addressing those before you do anything else.

as long as their bored & honed properly,no probs what so ever.as far as any starting problems, thats determined by what compression you go with, but EZ start cams or compression releases take care of that.our 98" kit come in either 9.8-1 or 10.5-1,the 9.8-1 would need either

Detail a bit more if you don't mind.  With contemporary cam options and assuming a willingness to touch up the heads with the cams in mind what modern cams would you put with either compression ratio?  Make the other assumption a build for a bagger with early torque in mind.  An engine that in real life would very rarely see north of 4500.

Been a long time since I've done one of those.  Interesting to see what the newer options might suggest.

We were one of the first shops in the country to bore the OEM cylinder to 98" starting back in 2006.
Very seldom do we ever bore to 95" anymore.
Must have over at least 100 or more, 98, and 107"ers rolling around now. We have a proprietary piston/gasket kit manufactured/supplied to us thru Wiseco.
Same/same for the 107"ers.
Simple staightforward boring/torque honing.
Thayers Sales & Service, Corfu N.Y. has tuned one of little 98"s, using an Andrews 37, Bub, 2/1, our heads, 10.0 cr.
108 hp/111 ft/lbs.
That particular bike has well over 30,000 on it, and a PA-based shop has tuned our higher out-put 98"ers rolling off at 120 hp..........that bike has been driven to Sturgis, from Eastern PA twice.
Nothing to it. :)

That's interesting Scott.  Just a guess but it's probably been since 2004 or 2005 since I did an 88 to 95 build for myself or one of the local buddies.  Lots of cams out now that didn't exist then.  Then we felt mostly satisfied if we topped 100/100.  Maybe just a wee bit more with really good head work to boot.  Good to read the old dogs aren't totally forgotten with the passage of time.

Actually those 98"s set up correctly can be quite a formidable powerplant, and are able put a big grin on a lot of faces.
