Terry,
Thanks that's the type info I'm looking to hear about. One of the features I like about the Zumo is it comes w/the mounts, specifically the clutch/bracket mount. Waiting to see one mounted like that so I can see how well it will be able to see the gauges. If I remember correctly the mounts for the series that you have required the additional purchase of mounts.

That is correct, Gary....the 2xxx series require the purchase of a cradle mount from Garmin...I happen to have a spare, if you decide to go that route.  It also requires the purchase of a mounting bracket...in my case a Tecmount (All Chrome, of course   ;) ), so you can add another 70 to 100 bucks for that part of it.  The clutch mount would not work for me as I have the chrome switch for the Legend shocks there.  I really don't think you could go wrong purchasing either unit.

I purchased my 2820 from this place:  http://www.gpsonsale.com/garmin/products/Zumo.htm   They currently have the Zumo for $739.  I have purchased two units from them (one is a handheld)...quick delivery, and good customer service.  They offer accesories as well.  Check out their site.

Jerry...I'm going to agree that it's fun to just head out and get lost sometimes...but, one thing that saved me on the recent trip to Tampa/West Palm when I got stuck in traffic on I-75, was that it gave me an alternate route, told me to take the next exit, and recalculated the best way to get there.  It was getting dark fast...I would not have enjoyed being "lost" in the 3 hours we spent on the bike after dark with temps in the 40's.  Showing your position in 3D, the road you're on, upcoming curves, towns, knowing the distance to the next turn, etc, proved to be valuable in that circumstance.  I am never without my Atlas to take a look at the "big picture" of where I am and where I'm headed, but the GPS is a good tool to have when you really need it.  When we left Jorge's house in West Palm, I just told it to take me back to Tampa the fastest way...it got me there, again after dark on unfamiliar roads.  I've got pretty good dead reckoning skills in the daylight, but when it gets dark...I prefer not to be riding at all...but when you don't have a choice, it is reassuring to hear the voice telling you it's time to make a turn down to counting the number of feet left till turning.

I'll take that over Diva thumping me in the head for getting us out in BFE in the middle of a Sugar Cane field at 8PM  ;D [smiley=nervous.gif]

Don,
If you didn't have either now which would you choose? Any others that are more up on this stuff can add in also. I'm still trying to figure which is going to be the best bang for my buck. I'm mainly interested in the GPS features (do like the Bluetooth stuff, but mostly wear a half helmet so not really sure if that would be applicable) any of the other feature(s) would be a plus.

D00d, the more I see of and read of the Zumo the less impressed I become.  Not that it isn't nice. As it seems to be. But its claim of being motorcycle specific is more advertising than reality.  Aside from being desiged to be "left handed" the rest is just bunk.  It uses standard car routing methods and doesnt' have a specific "two lane" or rural road preferences one can select.

So, to answer the question, what would I pick today?

If I wanted a really good GPS unit and didn't care anything about anything else other than a really nice mapping unit with a good display and great functions?  I'd save a lot of dollars and get a 2610 on eBay for anywhere from $250.00 to $350.00.  If I wanted that same quality, with a slightly dumb downed interface, still a nice screen, and added function of Bluetooth and the other newer bells and whistles I'd get the Garmin 28XX series.

Don,

Remember that NEXRAD images may not be possible on the ZUMO...it is a simpler weather function they are describing.

Gee Don now I don't know if I want one.  I have the Quest and it has been great.  Most of my buddies use the 2670.  Nice unit but I find it a little big and mine does all I need it to do.

Cheers, Chris [smiley=banana.gif]

I got mine and have been playing with it since yesterday.  SO far I like it and the screen is much nicer than my old 2620.  I got the Harley POI file loaded within about 3 minutes.  So now I have all 900 some Dealerships programmed in....that's pretty sweet.

How do Zumo routing functions compare to 2730 and 2820 units? Are road/area avoidance functions included, will it prioritzie a custom route based on a group of waypoints starting with the closest and work out to the fartherest ones?

Firedood, some thoughts about a GPS;  I really like having the ability to "see" where I am in raltion to the terrain.  I also like being able to see what is ahead on the road.  For example, on our trip to Sturgis this summer, some of the back roads were pretty twisty, and I knew what to expect from the next turn before I got there.  It also is nice know how far it is to the next point or turn.  I have the HD Quest, and am not real impressed with the screen, as far as visibility during bright sun.  I am interested in actually seeing the new Zumo, as it is supposed to be much better in bright sun.  I mounted mine to the inner fairing, but would not do that again. I would rather use the handlebar mount so I could change it out if needed.  I also like being able to plan my routes on the computer, download them to the unit and be ready when I ride.  I think once you have one, you will really enjoy using and having it, and wonder why it took you so long to buy one [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  I think if you wait a little, the price will come down and they will seem more cost effective.  Good luck on your decision, and let us know what you decide to do.
