Unfortunately, I guess there haven't been enough incidents in Harley's opinion to issue a Technical Service Bulletin with the NHTSA or, better still, a voluntary recall.  Obviously, the dealership that has my bike wasn't familiar with the problem since I had to bring Harley's internal bulletin to their attention.  The big difference between a NHTSA TSB and a recall is that Harley would be required to cover the cost of the repairs under the recall only.  A TSB has no such requirement.  For now, I'll sit back and see what Harley's service rep comes up with.  He doesn't have to travel far - the bike is in Milwaukee.  After reading another post, sure wish my bike were in Robin's hands at Gails HD in KC.

So here we are four days later and the service department has gone full circle. They told me they checked all possible connectors and thought the problem was identified. Apparently, a wire (or wires) on the ECM had been crushed by the seat because the ECM mounting bracket was misaligned. After repairing the wires, no more codes appeared. Just to make sure, the service advisor said the bike would tested all day in all sorts of conditions. That was yesterday. Today i was told the engine light came back on and the corresponding codes are again pointing to the compression releases. The techs at the dealership are stumped...and a factory rep is coming in tomorrow to assist. Anyone have a K1600 or Goldwing I can borrow in a few weeks? All kidding aside(?), I know it's a machine and prone to break so I will suck it up and let the factory rep attempt to find the problem. Should be an interesting day. PJ

Another wrinkle. I friend of mine was experiencing a problem similar to yours on a '10 Ultra. After much diagnosis, it turned out to be an almost-broken wire to the cylinder head temperature sensor in the front head. It was only hanging on by two strands. He fixed that and the problem disappeared! Along the way, he also had the dealer rework his fretted TCA connector pins per the bulletin referenced by others in this thread.

Thanks Ken. I was looking forward to my ride from Milwaukee to visit my nephew in the Atlanta area...might have driven right past you while checking out Lake Lanier. Our route takes us (er...would have taken us) right down 400 to his home in Buckhead. PJ

PJ, you would indeed drive right by us! We live just a couple of miles west of GA 400 Exit 15, just west of Cumming, GA. We used to live right by the Buford Dam, a stone's throw from Lake Lanier, but we bought the Badger Den last November and moved about 8 miles west. Lake Lanier is beautiful! We used to drive over the Buford Dam every day.

If you come down and have time, definitely ring me up and we can meet! I will PM you my cell #.

And do have them check the cylinder head temp sensor wires, just to eliminate that.

Something I learned when getting my license many years ago to get off a railroad crossing 2nd or 3rd gear and clutch out hit the starter..much easier than pushing these behemoths

Final post: not sure exactly what the factory service reps found defective, but I received a call late today informing me my bike was ready for pick up. It was test driven 70+ miles the past two days at highway speed, stop/start on the street, etc. with no problems observed.  The repair was covered under a combination of Harley "goodwill" and the emissions warranty, resulting in no charge to me. Obviously a great result and quite frankly unexpected. Enough said...thanks for everyone's support. PJ

FWIW, I think I'd want a basic understanding of what the repair consisted of...in case the problem reoccurs while traveling...

It would be helpful for the membership to know what was repaired/replaced if a similar problem is encountered while on the road.  Not for nothing, but I always find it frustrating to experience an issue with a site member, especially a safety issue, and have the story conclude without knowing the solution to the problem.

Anyway, glad you're issue is resolved and have a great trip!    :2vrolijk_21:

Unbelievable! The bike performed great for the first 600 miles of the 750 mile trek to ATL. Somewhere on I-24 in Tennessee the bike started to miss and stumble as if an injector had fouled. I radioed my crew to advise them i was having trouble and was pulling over. Before I could do so, the bike went into limp mode again with no throttle response. WTF? Thank God it was early a.m. with light traffic and before we hit the mountains. Anyway, I let the bike cool down for about 10 minutes before attempting to restart it. It turned right over and revved up just fine, although the check engine light came on. Despite the warning, we cautiously headed out because, frankly, we were far away from anything I recognized and I felt bad for holding up five other riders. The bike occasionally stumbled but we eventually made it to Atlanta on Sunday. I rode the bike to the nearest HD dealer Monday morning. Rather than receiving a friendly welcome to an out of town rider with a problem, the service adviser at this unnamed dealer shows utter indifference to my situation. I explained the bike's recent service history and suggested that he speak to the service manager at the dealer in Milwaukee. It's obvious he was not happy that he has to deal with a problem bike that somebody else worked on. I called the Milwaukee dealer to let them know what happened and they immediately call the Atlanta dealer and I'm told they pretty much get blown off. Monday passes without a call. Today I called HD customer service to complain about the ATL dealer's attitude and, more importantly, the concern I have about the reliability of my bike which could affect my personal well being. The customer service rep just listened and told me she would investigate and either the dealer or she would give me a call with an update. That was 11a.m. this morning. Never received a call from either today. Maybe tomorrow...or the next day. I don't want to open a discussion on the sub-par dealers out there, but the actions of this particular service adviser was totally inappropriate. I should have left right then and there and gone elsewhere and will consider going that route if no action is taken tomorrow. Can any of you ATL folks suggest a competent service department? I will remain strong through all of this, but right now I'm pretty disheartened. For all the risks we take every time we ride, a reliable bike should be the least of our worries.  Thanks for your continued support. PJ
