There aren't words to describe the hassles you've had to endure PJ.  Actually, unfortunately, I guess there are.  They would be "way too common."

Sorry Pete.  Be safe.

Lost count a long time ago trying to keep up with how many electronic throttle issues are reported just within this small community.  Frightening to consider what that means for the fleet at large.  Certainly many many many more electronic throttle issues than we ever had cables break.

Something we share Scott.  Admit to not really understanding some of the issues.  Can get my head around doing an engine design badly.  But things like the ETC comes from OE suppliers who do the same things for the automotive industry and don't have the same systemic issues in those applications.  Yet Harley can still find a way to f&%k it up.

I work for a Cat dealer on heavy equipment and we use the same DT electrical connectors Harley does. I was troubleshooting an electrical problem and when I researched bulletins I found a service magazine the stated we should no longer use the dielectric  grease. Here is the bulletin...

Dielectric grease should NOT be used in electrical connectors on Caterpillar machines regardless of the connector family. The use of dielectric grease in connector assemblies can result in moisture and dirt contamination. Moisture and dirt contamination can lead to shorts and/or intermittent connections.

Dielectric grease shall be restricted to use on bolted connections such as the following: ring terminals, cable assemblies, battery posts and spark plug connections. On bolted connections, Caterpillar part number 151-1340 Dielectric Grease should be used.

Just sayin... :D :nixweiss:

 :bananarock:

My throttle has acted strange a couple times here recently on my CVO RG .... but only for a couple seconds.  In checking out the threads, JR makes a great point .... and I have had to re-educate many of my customers regarding the use of dielectric grease in the automated laser and gps systems we install on Cat, and other brands of heavy equipment.  They can use Deutsch DT, and some Canon, Bendix, Amphenol military style and other types of sealed industrial connectors .... and you do NOT use dielectric grease IN them.  I'm not sure where this mis-conception is from ....... but it is common.  Dielectric grease is silicone based, and non-conductive. Coating conductors with dielectric grease is a very bad idea, especially low voltage. Thats why it is/was common to use around high voltage applications ... such as spark plug wires, and ignitions or magnetos; it is meant to seal and insulate. In high moisture applications, or connectors that are subject to weather and moisture such as on heavy machinery, we use Lubriplate inside the connection; as it conducts and is an effective moisture/corrosion barrier... and is suitable for low voltage applications......Just like your trailer connection on your truck. Lubriplate works wonders on boat trailer connections as an example.  Be careful how you use dielectric grease on your bike, is my point.

Update (for what it's worth). Picked ip bike from Atlanta dealer Saturday - tech discovered pinched wire in throttle circuit. Wire repaired. Additional pins replaced for good measure. Fixed, right? I drive about a mile away and the bike sputters, then continue to run normally. No engine light, just the one hesitation.  I travel down the road a little farther and it does it again. Now what? Scheduled to ride from Atlanta to Memphis tomorrow.  Will ride the crap out of it today actally hoping it will fsil here before I hit the road. This is now beyond just sucking...PJ

Be careful PJ.  This bike is going to get you hurt if you're not careful.

:2vrolijk_21:   At some point it becomes time to protect your own well being and to hell with a motorcycle.  If you don't have an attorney, I think I'd be looking for one.  I'd also be looking into my state's lemon laws and contacting the state attorney general's office.   This is total BS on a safety related system, but Harley seems to think they can blow off the safety stuff the same way they blow off things like crank runout and oil consumption and all the other crap they can't or won't fix.

Hey guys...not to worry. My lack of confidence in this bike led me to the conclusion I'd be negligent riding it anywhere. Instead, I'll be riding a friend's SEEG2 (never should have sold mine). I am contacting a dealer to have the bike picked up.  As for protecting my legal interest, my attorney is already looking into lemon laws, etc. Thanks again for everyone's support. PJ

Tell that to Harley.  It's a new bike with a factory warranty, so the customer shouldn't need to start replacing parts to fix a factory defect.  Since Harley's own people worked on it and didn't fix it, the right thing to do would be to buy the bike back before they get someone killed.  Unfortunately Harley management isn't very big on doing the right thing, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Agreed and I have worked on several bikes in the same situation only because the owners finally just got fed up fighting the repair. Changing out the induction module fixed all of them. If the TGS is bad or the wiring is pinched it always throws a specific code. The TCA sometimes will, sometimes not. For $175 and an hour of time, it's cheaper than all the trips to the dealer I'd bet.

I doubt the OP has been through the wringer enough yet to go Lemon Law but HD has been known to settle over issues, especially CVO issues so who knows.
