Has anyone ever changed their fuel filter in the gas tank ? my H/D shop says no need to or don't do it until about 50,000 miles said never has seen one stopped up enough to make bike not run correct ? Cost big dollars to change out when theirs no need in change it ?
The filter costs about $17, and the gasket for the access plate is about $7. So far I don't see the "big dollars". As for labor, it's not difficult to do it yourself, but even if you pay a shop to do it I can't imagine it costing more than an hours worth of their labor.
Anyhow, Harley recently changed the recommended service interval for the fuel filter to 100k miles, starting with the 2012 models. There was no change made to the actual filter, so I'm guessing they agree with your shop that it really isn't such a big deal after all. On the older models the problem really wasn't the filters clogging up anyway, it was the internal fuel lines developing holes The filter kits came with a new line. Late model bikes don't seem to have that problem anymore.
