On another board I followed a link to someone compiling people's experiences with the '07 models, and it is sounding frighteningly like the first year of Evos and Twin Cams repeating itself. When I ordered the SERK (fifty-two days and counting) I thought, hey, they've had almost ten years to get things sorted out with this engine, it's more an upgrade of the existing TC than a new one, and a lot of the stuff was on the Dyna's last year.
There seems to be a lot of people with heat problems and surging on the highway due to lean running, electrical glitches from internal wiring, and especially fifth and first gears that sound like "spoons in a coffee can". The dealer's fix is usually to change the mufflers, change the intake, change the injection mapping. But since they are "off-road only" pieces you pay for it and risk any warrenty problems later. Even then they are left with a bike that sounds like the gear box is coming apart. Thirty grand for a bike I have to spend another fifteen hundred to get it to run right? I hadn't planned to make a lot of changes to this one.
I thought the days of not buying a first year edition were behind us? I've had nine years of trouble-free service from my Fat Boy and I'm hearing a lot of poeplle saying they wished they'd bought an '06 and upgraded it, kept what they had, or waited to see if HD gets it sorted out. I'd be out a $500 non-refundable deposit, but it sounds like it could be several times that to fix the new one.
Besides the hopefully freak things like starters blowing up and engines dying outside of dealerships, are people having these chronic heat, electrical and gearbox noise problems?
